Alan Cafruny, the Henry Platt Bristol Professor of International Affairs, presented “Is U.S. Power Declining?” on Oct. 16 at Russia’s Higher School of Economics.

He also visited Sochi Oct. 19-22 where he participated in the 12th Annual Meeting of the Valdai International Discussion Club. The theme of the meeting was “Societies Between War and Peace: Overcoming the Logic of Conflict in Tomorrow’s World.” Participants included leading scholars of international relations and Russian politics from around the world, along with diplomats, government officials and political leaders.

The meeting featured presentations by Russian President Vladimir Putin; Sergei Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister; Ali Larijani, the speaker of the Iranian parliament; and Jack Matlock, former U.S. Ambassador to the Soviet Union and the 2008 Sol M. Linowitz Professor of International Affairs at Hamilton.

According to the Valdai Discussion Club website, the organization’s goal is “to promote dialogue between Russian and international intellectual elite, and to make an independent, unbiased scientific analysis of political, economic and social events in Russia and the rest of the world.”

Help us provide an accessible education, offer innovative resources and programs, and foster intellectual exploration.
