“Joyce’s Drinking,” an essay by Austin Briggs, the Hamilton B. Tompkins Professor of English Emeritus, was republished in a special anniversary issue of the James Joyce Quarterly as one of the 21 most important essays in the journal over the past 50 years.

The most recently published to be selected for reissue, Briggs noted that the deeply researched essay was written after his retirement and relocation to Mexico, where he depended on indispensable online assistance “from the wonderful Hamilton librarians.”

He added that “although the issue is dated Fall 2012/Spring 2013, it actually appeared in the fall of 2014.” The essay originally appeared in the Summer 2011 issue, published in April 2013.
