Joyce M. Barry, scholar-in residence, published a book review in the 2010 spring edition of West Virginia History: A Journal of Regional Studies. Barry reviewed the book Something’s Rising: Appalachians Fighting Mountaintop Removal by Silas House and Jason Howard, (University of Kentucky Press, 2009).
This text is an oral history showcasing central Appalachian residents in West Virginia, Kentucky and Virginia who serve as “witnesses” to the adverse cultural and environmental impacts of mountaintop removal coal mining, and make public stands against the practice. These witnesses include artists, coal miners and environmental activists who are part of the growing anti-mountaintop removal social movement in Appalachia. The journal in which Barry’s review appears is published twice a year by West Virginia University Press.
