Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies Aaron Strong has published two research articles with recent alumni who majored in Environmental Studies. Strong and Clare Barbato ’22 published an article on soil carbon offset programs in the journal npj Climate Action.

Strong and Robbie Rioux ’21 also published an article on strategies for reducing runoff pollution to Skaneateles Lake in the journal Environmental Challenges. Rioux is now a Ph.D. student in the School of Environment at Yale University, continuing his work on water quality and biogeochemistry.

Knee-Deep in the Mud at Rome Fish Hatchery

“I haven’t had the chance to get stuck knee-deep in the mud before.” Hamilton summer internship funding helps give students a variety of experiences which, for Robbie Rioux ’21, included spending some time in the mud. Rioux gathered data on aquatic life with the Rome Fish Hatchery, operated by the New York State DEC.

Three Hamilton environmental studies majors — Emily Benson ’23, Katie Tanner ’23, and Ellie Sangree ’24 — presented their research at the American Geophysical Union Annual Meeting in Chicago in December. The students were accompanied by Aaron Strong and Heather Kropp, assistant professors of environmental studies.
