Fifty-seven Hamilton seniors were inducted into Phi Sigma Iota, the national honorary society for students of foreign languages, in a ceremony on April 29 in the Science Center atrium. Each student was awarded a certificate to recognize outstanding achievement in the study of one or more foreign languages. In addition, three seniors were recognized by the Classics Department for their outstanding achievement in Latin and Greek.

After the awards ceremony,Visiting Assistant Professor of French Julie Kruidenier Tolliver ’02 spoke on the importance of languages in her life. Tolliver’s conclusion provides a fitting summary of the evening: “Language education creates bonds between people; it draws them out of isolation; it presents the opportunity for learning a thousand other things; it makes us understand the relativity of ideas and perspectives… The languages you’ve learned have formed patterns in your brains that will be hard to erase … but make sure you keep rehearsing these patterns. You never know when you might need a dose of absurdity to make sense of life.”
