"Coherence, Literature, Languages," an article that appeared in the Dec. 23 issue of InsideHigherEd, reported on a white paper released at the recent meeting of the Modern Language Association (MLA) that addressed "new ways of organizing English and language programs within the general parameters of a liberal arts education." The article referenced the panel that wrote the report including its leader, Yale professor and former MLA president Michael Holquist, and Hamilton President Joan Hinde Stewart.

On January 19, cell phone networks throughout D.C. got closer and closer to overload as thousands made last ditch efforts to snag inauguration tickets, and millions contacted friends and acquaintances to get in on celebration plans. While few were lucky enough to find tickets, at least a dozen current Hamilton students and many alumni from around the country flocked to the capital to see President Obama sworn in on Tuesday.

The build-up to this inauguration is like nothing I've seen as a lifelong resident of Washington, D.C. Security had been steadily ratcheting up since New Years, as 42,000 cops prepared to hit the streets to control the crowds. The traffic around Friday last week became unbearable, as millions of people swarmed into the city. Traveling anywhere in the city became more difficult then wading through a crowd at a Jonas Brothers' concert. In the week leading up to the big event, there was a huge run on stores selling warm clothes and hand warmers. Yuppies were waiting in lines at Hudson Trail Outfitters for long johns like they were trying to buy a Nintendo Wii.

Michael Evans '05 is featured on CNN's "Young People Who Rock" in recognition of his efforts in founding Full Court Peace, an organization in Belfast that uses the game of basketball to unite and educate teens. The team is comprised of Catholic and Protestant teenagers.

Rice Memorial High School in south Burlington, Vermont, has named Hamilton graduate Damian DiGiulian '93 as head coach of their newly expanded hockey program.

Professor of Religious Studies Jay Williams '54 will present an Alumni College during Reunions '09 on Thomas Nast, one of America's great political cartoonist.  Nast is credited with the creation of the Republican Elephant and the iconic Uncle Sam.

Hamilton's Nordic Ski Team is making a name for itself in competitions in the Northeast. Emily Stinson '09 has been instrumental in organizing a team that travels and competes every weekend.

Hamilton College graduate Ryan Mulligan '08 has recently made history when he became the first American Rugby League player to export his talents down-under.  Mulligan, standing just less than 6ft. and weighing 220 lb., recently signed with the South Newcastle Knights in New South Wales as the first in what could become a regular player exchange.
