Carolyn Carpan, director of public services in the Burke Library, recently penned a history of girls' series books titled Sister, Schoolgirls, and Sleuths: Girls' Series Books in America, published by The Scarecrow Press. The book is the first study of American girls' series books to examine the entire genre from its beginning in the 1840s to present day.

Luvuyo Mandela '09 was named Hamilton's eighteenth GOLD Scholar. In the age of multi-million dollar gifts many young alumni have asked, "How does my $25, $75 or $250 gift matter when the financial needs of Hamilton College are so great?" This question is answered by the GOLD Scholars Program.

Faculty Support Specialist Janet Simons and Instructional Technology Specialist Krista Siniscarco were among panelists at the Educause Learning Initiative Annual Conference, Jan. 20-22, in Orlando, Fla. The panel was titled "Lights, Camera, Action... Analysis and Creative Expression: Improving the Quality of Student Media Scholarship."

More than 100 Hamilton students participated in HAVOC's 11th annual MLK Jr. Day of Service on Saturday, Jan. 24. The students spent the afternoon volunteering at 10 area non-profit organizations including For the Good, Hope House, The Neighborhood Center and the Rome Humane Society. Most students participated in special activities and projects the organizations would not be able to accomplish without volunteer help.

Michael Evans '05 is featured on CNN's "Young People Who Rock" in recognition of his efforts in founding Full Court Peace, an organization in Belfast that uses the game of basketball to unite and educate teens. The team is comprised of Catholic and Protestant teenagers.

Leeann Brigham '09, one of Hamilton's Senior Fellows, is profiled in a column in her hometown newspaper, The Troy Record (12/19/08). Brigham is studying an animal model of schizophrenia as her Senior Fellow project. She hopes to spend next year at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden studying the neural circuits involved in motor control.

Jennifer Sunderlin '04 was recently appointed to serve on the Board of Directors of the Girl Scouts of Northeastern New York. Sunderlin graduated with a double major in Government and Theatre. At Hamilton, she was a member of Gamma Xi and Special K. After graduation, she attended Albany Law School of Union University and earned her Juris Doctor in 2007.

A new essay by Jay Williams '54, the Walcott-Bartlett Professor of Religion, is the featured article on the Bible and Interpretation Web site. In the article, "Mark, the gospel of radical transformation," Williams proposes a somewhat new interpretation of the ancient gospel based upon a literary rather than an historical meaning of the text.
