  • Elaine F. Weiss K'73 is the author of a new book which explores the story of the "farmerettes" -- the women who made up the Woman's Land Army of America and did men's work on the rural home front in uniform during World War I. Fruits of Victory: The Woman's Land Army of America in the Great War is published by Potomac Books, Inc.

  • Eleven Hamilton students are traveling to Arizona to participate in the No More Deaths Spring Break Project. Through this project college students travel to the borderlands in order to provide direct aid to migrants in need and learn firsthand about immigration and border justice issues. Hamilton participants are Emma Stewart '09, Caroline Miller '09, Kerry Coughlin '11, Angela Sanchez '12, Juancho Hurtado '11, Sam Doyon '12, Jesse Stromwick '09, Kate Harloe '12, Gillian Smith '09,  Connor Brown '12 and Corinne Bancroft '10.

  • Ella Gant, chair and associate professor of art, presented her work to Grrl Action, a program of the Austin-based theatre company, Rude Mechanicals. Rude Mechanicals are perhaps best-known for their off-Broadway run and national tours of Greil Marcus', "Lipstick Traces."

  • Sixteen members of Hamilton's class of 2009 were elected last week to the Epsilon chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation's oldest honor society. The students are Steven Beale, Nicholas Berry, Abigail Crimmins, Leandra Folk, Andrew Forman, Casey Green, David Hamilton, Rachel Horowitz, Blake Hulnick, Fiona MacQuarrie, Sarah Moore, Cassie Sullivan, Rita Tran, Benjamin Van Arnam, Jennifer Vano and Xin Wang.

  • The Hamilton College Sailing Team ventured south last weekend to compete for the second time in the Eckerd Intersectional regatta in Saint Petersburg, Fla. The team, comprised of nearly 30 active intercollegiate sailors, races in both keelboat (Colgate 26 and J-105 class) and dinghy (420 and FJ class) regattas as a member of the Mid-Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association.

  • Akilah Bond '09 finished seventh in the triple jump and earned All-America honors at the NCAA Division III men's and women's indoor track and field championships held at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology's Sports and Recreation Center in Terre Haute, Ind., on March 14.

The show stars Bill Paxton as modern polygamist Bill Henrickson tackling problems outside his three-house suburban home. "Big Love" has been nominated for Emmy and Golden Globe awards.   • Professor of Economics Erol Balkan and Professor of Anthropology Emeritus Henry Rutz have co-authored "Reproducing Class: Education, Neoliberalism, and the Rise of the New Middle Class in Istanbul," published in January. Focusing on the families of Istanbul's new middle class, the authors address questions about the social construction of middle-class reality in the context of the rapid changes that have come about through recent economic growth in global markets and the global diffusion of information technology.
