Postdoctoral Fellow in Sociology and Visiting Assistant Professor of Sociology Yagmur Karakaya recently participated in a workshop on Claiming the People’s Past: Populist Engagements with History and the Challenges to Historical Thinking.

While most campus activity remained virtual this summer, three Hamilton faculty members brought colleagues and students from around the globe together by hosting academic conferences. Assistant Professor of Physics Kristen Burson co-chaired the 81st Physical Electronics Conference (PEC), Associate Professor of Sociology Jaime Kucinskas convened a Social Mindfulness Symposium, and Associate Professor of Philosophy Russell Marcus co-organized the American Association of Philosophy Teachers (AAPT) summer series.

The roots of modern social issues can be traced to any given corner of world history, provided one knows how to follow them. White supremacist and patriarchal ideas, for example, might underpin the dynamics of 17th-century English court ceremonies — at least that’s what Hannah Petersen ’22 is considering in her Emerson grant research project on the presentation of “otherness” in Stuart period antimasques.

Top social scientists from around the world spanning from Iran to California virtually convened at Hamilton College to discuss the status of the latest social science on mindfulness July 26.

Lauren Hamilton ’22 didn’t need virtual assistant Alexa to help her find an internship this summer. Hamilton is spending her summer at a New Jersey Amazon facility working as a workplace health and safety intern, ensuring that employees are using equipment properly and observing COVID-19 regulations, while keeping an eye on the site’s working conditions in general.

Continuing a project that began last summer, four Hamilton students are working with Visiting Assistant Professor of Sociology Mahala Stewart to study how families have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Shania Kuo ’23, Caroline Freundel ’24, Kaela Dunne ’22, and Steven Campos ’22 are interviewing local parents, mostly mothers, to gain a better understanding of how their lives and households have changed over the course of the past year. The research is being supported by the Arthur Levitt Public Affairs Center.
