Hamilton College’s Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art presents “Alyson Shotz: Force of Nature” opening Saturday, Oct. 11, from 4 – 6 p.m. This eponymous exhibition features new and recent work by Alyson Shotz, an abstract artist who creates monumental sculptures, photo-collages and installations. Preceding the opening reception, Shotz will discuss her work from 3 – 4 p.m. in the museum. The exhibition, opening and artist’s talk are free and open to the public.

Lillia McEnaney ’17 recently published an article in the international journal Museum Anthropology, the publication of the Council for Museum Anthropology, a section of the American Anthropological Society.  The article titled “Museum Anthropology: Conversations in the Field”  is a compilation of multiple interviews that she conducted with various professionals in the field, including the curator of globalization at the Smithsonian Institution.

Hamilton College President Joan Hinde Stewart announced the death of Life Trustee Keith Wellin ’50, GP’11, ’14 in an email to the Hamilton community. Wellin died in Charleston, S.C., on Sept. 14, at the age of 88.

The Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art at Hamilton will host a Wellin Kids: Summer Celebration on Friday, June 20, from 2 to 3 p.m., at the museum on College Hill Road. The event will feature chalk drawing on the museum terrace and free ice cream. This summer celebration is free and open to the public.

Wellin Museum of Art Associate Director and Curator Susanna White presented on a panel about visible storage as classroom at the annual meeting of the Association of Academic Museums and Galleries in Seattle on May 17. Her paper was titled "A Museum Turned Inside Out: The Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art at Hamilton College."

The work of nine senior art majors will be featured in an exhibition at the Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art, May 8-24. The exhibit is free and open to the public.

Polly Roberts, professor of world arts and cultures/dance at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), will deliver a lecture on the display of sacred objects in a museum context on Thursday, April 17, at 4:15 p.m., in the Overlook of the Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art.

When celebrated Indian street photographer Pranlal K. Patel died in January at the age of 104, he left behind an impressive legacy and 70 years worth of works. An exhibit at the Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art has brought new life to some of the artist’s images from the early twentieth century.

A reception honoring Pranlal Patel’s son and grandson, who have traveled from India to view the Wellin Museum of Art exhibition “Refocusing the Lens: Pranlal K. Patel's photographs of women at Work in Ahmedabad,” will take place on Wednesday, April 2, from 4 to 5:30 p.m., in the Wellin Museum. The public is invited to attend.

The Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art will host a screening of artist/photographer Alec Soth’s Somewhere to Disappear, on Thursday, April 3, 4:15 p.m. in the Overlook in the Wellin Museum. The screening is free and open to the public.
