The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has awarded the Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art a two-year, $100,000 grant to study the museum’s educational programs for local public schools. The study will help the Wellin Museum work more effectively with public school educators to supplement school curricula within the structure of the Common Core requirements. Study results will be used to create new programming for the museum. 

“Some exhibitions are very good and you leave with a feeling that the artist met your expectations ... But there are those rare shows where the artist actually raises the bar and the work leaves you feeling as if you've been privy to something extraordinary.” So began the Syracuse Post-Standard review by writer Katherine Rushworth of the Wellin Museum’s current exhibition, “Force of Nature.” The show is scheduled to close on Sunday, April 5.

Hamilton Program in New York City students had the opportunity to visit the vibrant studio of celebrated New York painter and sculptor Hunt Slonem.  The event featured a reception with alumni organized by Hamilton trustee Adrienne Ruger Conzelman ’92.

Assistant Professor of Physics Kate Jones-Smith led a gallery talk and discussion on the mathematical and scientific concepts reflected in the Wellin Museum’s current exhibition Alyson Shotz: Force of Nature. The Feb. 19 talk explored how different practical and theoretical elements of math and science apply to Shotz’s work on display, many of which are sculptures named after scientific and mathematical terminology. 

Artist Alyson Shotz, drummer and music educator Nasheet Waits, and animator Todd Akita will present a lecture on Tuesday, Feb. 10, at 4:15 p.m., in the Wellin Museum Overlook. They will discuss the process of creating “The Bedroom: Time Lapse,” an animated film featured in the Wellin’s current exhibition “Alyson Shotz: Force of Nature.”

Associate Professor of History Lisa Trivedi delivered a paper "Depicting Labour, Performing Labour: Working Women in Pranlal Patel's Jyoti Sangh Series" and Chaired a panel at a conference held at Jamia Millia Islamia University in New Delhi, India.

Manager of Educational Programming and Outreach Megan Austin and School and Family Educator Amber Spadea presented an overview of educational programs offered by the Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art at the 2014 New York State United Teachers Regional Education Conference on Nov. 7 in Utica, N.Y.

Paul Clemence, New York-based photographer and author, will present a lecture, “Perception Meets Expression,” on Thursday, Nov. 13, at 4:15 p.m., in the Overlook in the Wellin Museum of Art. The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will discuss the perception and expression of architecture through the photographic lens.

A group of Hamilton students in the Sign Language and Deaf Culture class and students from New York State School for the Deaf (NYSSD) met on Tuesday, Oct. 21, at the Wellin Museum of Art to view and discuss various pieces of art. The Hamilton students were fulfilling a class assignment for their course taught by Lecturer in the Education Studies Program Vicky Allen.

Hamilton’s combined Fallcoming and Family Weekend, Oct. 9-12, will celebrate the arts with a number of exciting events including the dedication of The Kevin and Karen Kennedy Center for Theatre and the Studio Arts, the opening of the new Alyson Shotz exhibit in the Wellin Museum, and addresses by national leaders in the arts world.
