Just in time for the start of FebFest 2019, Mother Nature dumped several inches of snow on the Hill. Events kicked off on Feb. 12 with Stan Kolonko of the Ice Farm in Syracuse creating an ice sculpture of a snowflake on Sadove Terrace.

Nine Hamilton students traveled to Kure Beach, N. C., over winter break to help community members clean up houses that still have damage from Hurricane Florence. The Alternative Winter Break service trip worked with Community Collaborations International. Students built a fence for a horse pasture, cleaned out flooded shelves, packed belongings prior to house renovations, and dug a trench to help with rainwater drainage.

For most students, Thanksgiving Break is a week for family; for others, including international students who are not able to return home, it is a time for new cultural experiences and friends. Although the campus was quiet and cold, this Thanksgiving (or “Friendsgiving”) at Hamilton was made warmer with community-building activities and shared holiday spirit.

Hamilton’s Late Nite and Figure Skating Club teamed up to sponsor HamSkate on a recent Friday night. The campus community was invited for a night of public skating with free skate rentals, hot cocoa, pizza and cookies

The Black and Latinx Student Union held its second annual Day of Service on Saturday, Nov. 10. BLSU gathered 17 of its members to volunteer at two local Hamilton community partner organizations: Hope House and Sculpture Space.

Student volunteers collect and package food for delivery to charitable organizations in Utica, including the Rescue Mission of Utica and the Johnson Park Center.

A large crowd gathered in the Events Barn on Nov. 9 for Multicultural Mayhem, a celebration of diversity through performances, fashion, and food. The event was organized by On the Move, a student organization that builds relationships between Utica’s refugee community and Hamilton College.

Six Hamilton students went to Clinton Middle School to help facilitate a Hanging with Hamilton open gym on Nov. 2. At the event, the Hamiton students played volleyball, basketball, and Castle on the Fence with about 20 middle school students.
