The Balkan states are marked by great ethnic pride and nationalism. Ethnic tensions have stirred conflict on the Balkan Peninsula for thousands of years, and in the age of globalism, defining an ethnic and nationalistic identity is of increasing importance for the Balkan countries. This summer, Annie Hudson ’12 will travel to and conduct research in Kosovo, Serbia and Macedonia to study national cohesiveness and state-building.

Alan Cafruny, the Henry Platt Bristol Professor of International Affairs, gave an invited talk titled “No Way Out: Tears in EU Unity” during a workshop on April 15 in Ottawa. The workshop, “Prosperity and Security: The Challenge of Uncertain Times,” was organized by the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, Public Safety Canada and Export Development Canada.

Alan Cafruny, the Henry Platt Bristol Professor of International Affairs, gave an invited talk at "Eurocentrism or Euro-Crisis: A Day-long conference with Perry Anderson," at the Institute for Critical Theory, Duke University, on March 27.

Eleven students from Hamilton’s Model European Union team and faculty advisor Alan Cafruny, the Henry Platt Bristol Professor of International Affairs, attended the 23rd annual EuroSim conference in Antwerp, Belgium, on Jan. 5-10. The topic of this year’s conference was Russia-EU relations and Hamilton students took on a variety of roles, including members of the delegation from the Czech Republic, the Justice Minister of Ireland, and several members of Parliament.

Alan Cafruny, the Henry Bristol Professor of International Affairs, presented a seminar at the Free University of Amsterdam titled “Obama’s foreign policy after year 1.”

Alan Cafruny, the Henry Platt Bristol Professor of International Affairs, attended the 9th annual European Sociological Association Conference in Lisbon, Portugal, from Sept. 3 - 6. He was a member of the program committee of the Critical Political Economy Research Network and presented a paper titled "The Global Financial Crisis and European Integration Theory."

Alan Cafruny, the Henry Platt Bristol Professor of International Affairs, was the co-presenter of the keynote speech at a conference on the European Union titled "Globalisation and European Integration: The Nature of the Beast" held June 6-7 at the University of Warwick.

Alan Cafruny, Henry Platt Bristol Professor of International Affairs, presented a paper titled "Globalization and Europe" at a workshop on globalization and the state on May 19 at the Moynihan Institute of Global Affairs at Syracuse University's Maxwell School.
