In early November, students in the Hamilton Program in New York City gathered before the iconic red doors of the Bowery Mission for the second time this semester. The Bowery Mission, located on the outskirts of NoLIta (North of Little Italy), has been serving hungry and homeless New Yorkers since 1879.

Students in Hamilton’s Program in New York City recently attended a breakfast hosted by alumni at Citigroup, giving them a chance to informally connect with alumni in the industry.  Citi’s banking offices are located in Tribeca, not too far from Hamilton’s apartments in Battery Park City. The event was hosted by  alumni Jeffrey Schackner ‘89 and Peter Tague ‘88.

The Hamilton students in NYC attended a lecture by renowned economist Jeffrey Sachs titled “The Price of Civilization: Reawakening American Virtue and Prosperity” on Oct. 25.  Sachs is the Quetelet Professor of Sustainable Development, professor of health policy and management, and director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University, and special advisor the U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

The students on Hamilton’s NYC program attended a lecture at NYU’s Stern School of Business, hosted by David Backus ’75, a professor of economics at Stern. The lecture covered topics from foreign exchange to the European crisis to the current fiscal problems facing the United States.

The students in Hamilton’s NYC program participated in their first organized cultural outing as a group, visiting the Lyonel Feininger exhibit at the Whitney Museum on New York’s Upper East Side on Oct. 12.

It’s inevitable that at times we can get down on ourselves, daunted by the prospect of what lies ahead. The threat of a double dip recession, prolonged unemployment after graduation, or even just a bad grade on a homework assignment can darken one’s outlook. At these moments, it's important to put things into perspective, as Hamilton Program in New York students learned on Oct. 1 while volunteering at the Bowery Mission, the oldest such establishment in New York City.  

On September 21, students in Hamilton's New York City program visited the Barclays Capital building for a discussion hosted by Hamilton alumni George Mack ’93 and Alexandra Leighton ’09. Barclays Capital, located on 49th Street and 7th Avenue, is one of the world’s premier investment banks.

A dinner and reading by author Colum McCann was the culminating event for students in this semester’s Program in New York City.  The event was part of the Eat, Drink & Be Literary series sponsored by the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM). The Hamilton students’ attendance was underwritten by Arthur Levitt  P’81, HD ’81, Brooklyn native and BAM enthusiast, and Bill Lynch ’82, vice president for development at BAM.

On March 30 students in the Program in New York City visited one of the city’s great community museums. Located on 5th Avenue and 104th street, El Museo del Barrio is thinking ahead to how museums will engage their communities in the globalized and digitized future.
