“Too many Americans know little history and less civics, but efforts to correct those deficits have collapsed because of partisan differences over what should be taught and why,” President David Wippman and Cornell Professor of American Studies Glenn Altschuler stated in the opening of their recent op-ed titled “Getting to ‘Yes’ on civics education.”

“Robust training and oversight [are] key,” said Hamilton Counseling Center Director David Walden as he described the College’s peer counselor program in a recent Wall Street Journal article. “With Therapists in Short Supply, College Students Counsel Each Other,” published on Feb. 12, provided an in-depth look into how Hamilton’s peer counselor program works, how peer counselors are able to “provide a supportive ear and not actual therapy [and] relieve some of the demand on the licensed therapists.”

The town of Kirkland and village of Clinton are the Mohawk Valley recipients of a $10 million Downtown Revitalization Initiative grant from New York State. It’s part of a total state commitment of $100 million in DRI funding and investments to help communities boost their economies by transforming downtowns into vibrant neighborhoods.

Ten Hamilton faculty members were approved for tenure by the College’s Board of Trustees at its March meeting. They include Ryan Carter (music), Jose Ceniceros (mathematics), Alexsia Chan (government), Justin Clark (philosophy), Matt Grace (sociology), Tom Helmuth ‘09 (computer science), Natalie Nannas (biology), Colin Quinn (anthropology), Anne Valente (literature and creative writing), and Keelah Williams (psychology).

“What Does Freedom Mean in Online Speech?,” Hamilton’s next Common Ground presentation, will take place on Monday, March 27, at 7 p.m. in the Fillius Events Barn. The program, which is free and open to the public, features two experts who will examine the issue of online speech from different perspectives.

“Student Industry Coordinators Serve as Alumni Network Bridge,” a Feb. 22 article in Inside Higher Ed, celebrated the Career Center’s Connect Program. The article was part of the publication’s new daily “Student Success” column, which highlights “a unique feature or twist … worth modeling.”

Retired Navy Adm. Michelle J. Howard will deliver Hamilton’s 2023 Commencement address and receive an honorary degree on Sunday, May 21, at 10:30 a.m., in the Margaret Bundy Scott Field House. Howard chaired the 2020-22 Congressional Naming Commission that identified and made recommendations to remove, rename, or modify Department of Defense assets that commemorated the Confederacy or those who voluntarily served it.

Communications Office student writer Alejandro Sosa Hernández ’26 recently spoke with Hamilton’s new Associate Vice President and Dean of Admission John McLaughlin, who came to Hamilton after eight years as director of admission at the University of Pennsylvania. The two discussed McLaughlin’s role overseeing all aspects of new student recruitment and selection. Here are some excerpts.
