John McEnroe, the John and Anne Fischer Professor in Fine Arts, is co-leader of a team that is working on a complete architectural survey of the town of Gournia on the island of Crete. The work was highlighted in a lengthy article in the May/June issue of Archaeology magazine. “The Minoans of Crete” focused on site excavation that began more than a century ago.

Visiting Professor of Art History Scott MacDonald completed his obligation as a 2011 Academy Film Scholar on March 18 with a lecture and film screening at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Hollywood.

The age-old adage of “Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it” appears to be playing itself out yet again in Europe. From the return of “the German question,” to civil unrest in the former USSR, or the resurgence of political scapegoating and economic disarray, current conditions are raising concern from the global community. On April 2 the Government Department hosted a roundtable panel of four Hamilton faculty members to address key elements of the continent’s contemporary crisis.

Alan Cafruny, the Henry Platt Bristol Professor of International Affairs, published an article titled “European Integration Studies, European Monetary Union, and Resilience to Austerity in Europe: Post-mortem on a Crisis Foretold” in a special issue of Competition and Change.

Recipients of the 2015 Emerson Summer Collaborative Research Grants were recently announced by the Dean of Faculty's office. Created in 1997, the Emerson Foundation Grant program was designed to provide students with significant opportunities to work collaboratively with faculty members, researching an area of interest. Twenty-five Hamilton students and 23 faculty members will be working on the following projects this summer. 

Visiting Assistant Professor of Classics Jesse Weiner recently published articles in Classical Receptions Journal and in the book Classical Traditions in Science Fiction and he also delivered a related lecture at Bryn Mawr College in February.

Assistant Professor of Chemistry Max Majireck was a co-author on a collaborative paper published in the Feb. 10 issue of Cell Reports. “Niche-Based Screening in Multiple Myeloma Identifies a Kinesin-5 Inhibitor with Improved Selectivity over Hematopoietic Progenitors” resulted from a project that involved 33 researchers and 16 different institutional affiliations including Harvard, Columbia and the Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT.

Joyce M. Barry, visiting assistant professor of women’s studies, published an article in the anthology Women of the Mountain South: Identity, Work and Activism.

Maria Willstedt, assistant professor of Hispanic studies, presented "From Castilian to Spanish to Spanglish: A Historical Example of Translation vs. Globalization," at the interdisciplinary symposium Translation versus Globalization, held Feb. 20-21 at the University of North Carolina, Charlotte.

“Robert Knight: In God’s House,” a collection of photographs and video by Assistant Professor of Art Robert Knight, is on display Feb. 24 through Sept. 13 at Munson-Williams-Proctor Art Institute (MWPAI) in Utica, N.Y. The exhibition focuses on the adaptation of religious spaces in the Utica area.
