  • April will bring us a reprieve from the weather and an annual celebration of an original American art form. In 2001, the Smithsonian Museum of American History designated April as Jazz Appreciation Month (JAM). Schools and cultural institutions across the country host concerts and workshops to highlight our musical gift to the world. Further information about JAM can be found at www.smithsonianjazz.org. Jazz is alive and well at Hamilton College where the Fillius Jazz archive resides. We will join the JAM celebration with a number of campus events listed below.

  • Hamilton students might be nearing the end of their spring break but they’ll have plenty to look forward to as the spring semester resumes on March 30.  The college calendar is loaded with upcoming lectures, performance and events from now until the end of the semester. See our list of some April events coming up.

  • The Hamilton College Choir is on the road for its annual spring break tour, this year performing in five cities in the South as well as Cincinnati and Pittsburgh. The 65-member choir is directed by G. Roberts Kolb, professor of music and director of choral music at Hamilton since 1981.

  • Fourteen Hamilton students in the New York City Program were among those fortunate to get tickets to the hottest show in New York on March 7. They went to see Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “Hamilton,” a hip-hop musical about the rise and fall of Alexander Hamilton, the architect of our nation’s financial system, first Wall St. power broker, and of course, the College’s namesake. The show will complete its run at Public Theater on May 3 and then move to Broadway’s Richard Rodgers Theatre in July.

  • The Hamilton College Orchestra, conducted by Heather Buchman, presents the annual Brainstorm! concert on Sunday, March 8,  at 3 p.m., in Wellin Hall, Schambach Center for Music and the Performing Arts. This concert is free and open to the public.

  • The Department of Dance and Movement Studies will present its annual Spring Dance Concert on Friday, March 6, and Saturday, March 7, at 7:30 p.m., in Wellin Hall, Schambach Center for Music and Performing Arts.

  • The Marine Corps All-Star Jazz Band will perform a free concert on Tuesday, March 3, at 8 p.m., in the Fillius Events Barn.  The ensemble is under the direction of Chief Warrant Officer 2 Steve B. Giove, officer in charge, and Staff Sergeant Ken Ubo, musical director.

  • Hamilton College Performing Arts presents Anonymous 4 and Bruce Molsky in 1865: Songs of Hope and Home from the American Civil War on Saturday, Feb. 28, at 7:30 p.m., in Wellin Hall, Schambach Center.

  • Hamilton College Performing Arts presents Symphoria on Sunday, Feb. 22, at 3 p.m., in Wellin Hall, Schambach Center.

  • Hamilton College Performing Arts presents jazz vocalist Gregory Porter on Saturday, Feb. 21, at 7:30 p.m., in Wellin Hall, Schambach Center. Porter will perform fan favorites, including selections from his Grammy Award-winning album “Liquid Spirit.”
