In announcing the expansion of its applied research network “to explore the most effective and impactful use cases in virtual reality, augmented reality and 3D printing,” HP Inc, named Hamilton College among a group of “elite colleges and universities” as a participant in the program.

President David Wippman has announced that Joe Shelley, assistant vice chancellor and CIO, information technologies, at the University of Washington Bothell, will become the liberal arts college’s next vice president for libraries and information technology.

This lightboard is an innovative teaching tool that allows for a more interactive experience for faculty members and their students. It was built by College carpenters in consultation with Director of Audiovisual Services Tim Hicks. The lightboard presentation is taped, and made available as a video as part of the classroom instruction.

Lisa Forrest, director of research and instructional design, was a featured poet for the Burchfield Penney Art Center’s 2016 Writers & Poets Series on Oct. 9.

“I’m hoping that I can give this document to an organization that will take good care of it and allow other people to study and appreciate it.” These words, spoken by Jean Waite on an episode of PBS’s History Detective in 2012, prompted Hamilton’s Director of Special Collections Christian Goodwillie to place a call that, three years later, led to a donation to the college’s Communal Societies collection.

Monk Rowe, the Joe Williams Director of the Jazz Archive and lecturer in music performance, recently presented two programs at the International Society for Music Educators conference in Glasgow, Scotland. He also conducted interviews with Swedish jazz pianist Hakan Rydin and British guitarist Laurence Juber to add to the Jazz Archive.

Symbols in the Wilderness: Early Masonic Survivals in Upstate New York, co-authored by Director of Special Collections Christian Goodwillie, began with a chance glance at a building as he drove to Cooperstown, N.Y. Intrigued by the structure, Western Star Lodge and now the Bridgewater Masonic Lodge, he became even more interested in the art work it once housed. Thus Goodwillie’s exploration of Masonic symbols – expressed in paintings, murals, textiles and graphics – began.  

The Central NY Library Resources Council (CLRC) recently awarded Hamilton funding to complete the digitization of the Beinecke Lesser Antilles manuscripts, part of the Burke Library’s Special Collections. The Beinecke Collection includes rare original documents, maps, plantation reports and correspondence, along with oil paintings and watercolors.

Christian Goodwillie, director and curator of Special Collections and Archives in Burke Library, recently published “Baseball, Beards, Bands, and the Babes: Michigan’s House of David Religious Community” in Ephemera Journal, the quarterly publication of the Ephemera Society of America.

Vice President for Libraries and Information Technology David Smallen P’97 was honored as the 2016 Distinguished Service Award recipient by Hamilton’s Alumni Association. Alumni Association President Gordon Kaye ’74 presented the award on April 8 during the Alumni Council’s Recognition dinner.
