As a high school senior in the Bronx, Osvaldo Adames ’15 ran out of math courses to take. By his junior year at Hamilton, where he majored in math and minored in Chinese, he'd grown to understand the gap in resources and opportunity students faced at his former school, which hadn’t offered calculus, much less AP Calculus.

What does it mean to have “equal access” to higher education in different cultures? Kureem Nugent ’18, recipient of a Thomas J. Watson Fellowship intends to spend the next year answering just that. He said his experience at a small liberal arts college as a first-generation student will lead him to explore how cultural capital plays a role in the path to higher education.

Deasia Hawkins ’18 has been awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Germany. She studied abroad in Germany during the 2016-17 academic year and says she “looks forward to returning and immersing myself once again in the culture and history Germany has to offer.”

Kureem Nugent ’18, Isabel O'Malley ’18, Paula Ortiz ’18, and Marquis Palmer ’18 have been named Watson Fellows providing them a $30,000 stipend to pursue a “year of independent, purposeful exploration” abroad. Although students from 40 peer schools are eligible to receive these awards, no other school had more than three recipients this year.

More than 50 Hamilton students are forgoing warm beaches and powdery slopes to lend a hand to others through the 25th annual Alternative Spring Break (ASB). ASB is a volunteer venture that consists of five different community service trips this year.

Six students were awarded prizes in three categories in the annual Public Speaking Competition on Saturday, March 3, in the Chapel. The finalists were chosen after an open preliminary round held in February. Speakers’ presentations were either persuasive or informative in nature, and in one category, students addressed an assigned topic.

Hamilton's Eli Saucier '18 will compete in the 200-meter dash at this weekend's 2018 NCAA Division III Men's and Women's Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala., on March 9.

As the clock struck 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 23, a group of student theatre artists gathered to begin Untitled @ Large’s annual 24-Hour Theatre Festival. The 16 participants, who had registered in their preferred role -- director, playwright, or actor -- in advance, arrived on Friday evening to be sorted into groups and be presented with the year’s randomly selected theme. The weekend’s festival added the new twist of requiring each playwright to include a specific line in their original dialogues.

Hamilton’s Opportunity Programs took part in the New York Student Aid Alliance Advocacy Day in Albany on Feb. 13.

Hamilton College’s Black and Latinx Student Union (BLSU) joined over 700 participants from other colleges and universities at the 23rd Annual Black Solidarity Conference, held at Yale University from Feb. 8 to 11.
