Thirty-five Hamilton students are teaching Spanish to third-, fourth- and fifth-grade students at Clinton Elementary. They volunteer in groups and work closely with the Clinton students to help them improve their language skills and gain an appreciation for foreign languages. Hispanic Studies Teaching Fellow Maria Gabriela Portal and Elisabeth MacColl ’16 run the program, which will continue throughout the semester.

Hispanic Studies seniors kicked off the semester dancing salsa, merengue, and cha cha cha in a special event on Jan. 24. Every spring term, the Hispanic Studies department organizes the event in order to congratulate them as they head toward graduation.

Thirty-five Hamilton students are teaching Spanish to children in kindergarten, first and second grades at Clinton Elementary School this semester. They began on Oct. 21 after attending two training workshops and will continue teaching until Dec. 2. The Hamilton students work in groups and take turns during the week, teaching a class of 20 children.

Ramón Hamilton’s award-winning movie “Smuggled” will be screened on Thursday, Nov. 14, at 8 p.m., in the Taylor Science Center’s Kennedy Auditorium. Ramón Hamilton will be present to introduce his movie and answer questions.

A book in which Assistant Professor of Hispanic Studies Xavier Tubau contributed a chapter has been published by Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona. It is titled Las razones del censor. Control ideológico y censura de libros en la primera Edad Moderna (Understanding the censor. Ideological control and book censorship in the Early Modern Period).

Three Hamilton College faculty members were approved for tenure by the college’s board of trustees during a recent meeting. The board granted tenure to Joana Sabadell-Nieto (Hispanic Studies), Katherine Terrell (English) and Christopher Vasantkumar (anthropology).

Associate Professor of Hispanic Studies Joana Sabadell-Nieto presented a paper at the Kentucky Foreign Language Conference held April 18-20 at the University of Kentucky. The presentation was part of a panel on “relationalities” organized and chaired by Sabadell-Nieto.

Associate Professor of Hispanic Studies Joana Sabadell-Nieto delivered an invited lecture on April 2 at the Department of Languages, Literatures and Linguistics at Syracuse University.

A group of Hamilton College students are sharing their knowledge of the Spanish language with some very young learners this year. They’re volunteering their time to tutor first grade and kindergarten students in Spanish at Clinton Central Schools (CCS). Organized by Associate Professor of Hispanic Studies Edna Rodríguez-Plate, the program began at the start of this academic year.

Associate Professor of Hispanic Studies Edna Rodriguez-Plate presented “Nuevos Panoramas, nuevas historias: el cine cubano después del periodo especial” (New Panoramas, New Histories: Cuban Cinema after the Special Period) at the XXX International Congress of the Latin American Studies Association in San Francisco in May.
