  • During the spring semester, 27 Hamilton students taught Spanish to students at Clinton Elementary School. The Hamilton students participated in a training workshop in order to learn about teaching methods and to discuss lesson plans. The program began in February and continued through the end of the semester.

  • Students in the Hispanic Studies Latin American film course (HSPT 323/423) recently visited the George Eastman Museum, in Rochester, N.Y., home to an important celluloid film collection. They viewed key works in the George Eastman archives and toured climate-controlled celluloid vaults.

  • Anyone who doubts the significance of Hamilton students’ research should have a talk with Arthur Williams ’16. His summer research, focused on the impact of microfinance loans on Cuban entrepreneurship, attracted the attention of President Obama’s senior director for speech writing as the president prepared for his historic trip to the island nation this week. Williams, an international student from Jamaica, also presented that research at SUNY Binghamton, and he attended Nasdaq’s Cuba Opportunity Summit.

  • Xavier Tubau, assistant professor of Hispanic studies, was appointed as a Mayers Fellow at the Huntington Library in San Marino, Calif.  The fellowship will support a month's work in primary sources related to Tubau’s book project on political propaganda during the empire of Charles V.

  • The Hispanic Studies Department recently took students to view works by Cuban American artist Emilio Sánchez at Munson Williams Proctor Arts Institute (MWPAI) in Utica.  Mary Murray, curator of modern and contemporary art at MWPAI, did a behind-the-scenes tour for Hispanic Studies students in February.

  • Assistant Professor of Hispanic Studies Xavier Tubau recently received grants from the American Philosophical Society and the Central New York Humanities Corridor for two projects he is working on.

  • Pragda, a distributor of films from Spain and Latin America, has awarded Hamilton a grant for the organization of a Spanish Film Club festival. Five films will be featured in the festival that starts on Tuesday, Feb. 2, with Bad Hair (Venezuela, 2014).

  • Last week, 28 students from Hamilton, Grinnell, Scripps and Smith College visited the Spanish region of Andalusia as part of the  Hamilton College Academic Year in Spain orientation trip. Andalusia is the most populated Spanish Autonomous Community.   Among other products, Andalusia is also known for its olive oil production.
