Last fall, Chenchen Zhao ’18 took Linear Optimization, a mathematics course with Professor Sally Cockburn. Zhao and Cockburn are designing an integer linear program that places incoming students into orientation groups, with as many as possible getting their top choices.

Professor of Mathematics Sally Cockburn published a chapter in the recently released volume Using Philosophy of Mathematics in Teaching Undergraduate Mathematics in the Mathematical Association of America Notes Series.

Sally Cockburn, professor of mathematics, presented her paper, "Preimages of Small Geometric Cycles," at the Combinatorics and Optimization Seminar at the University of Ottawa on Jan. 29. This work is part of her ongoing research into measuring the complexity of straight-line representations of networks, in terms their vertex adjacency and edge crossing structures.

Professor of Mathematics Sally Cockburn gave a talk titled ‘A Senior Seminar in Set Theory as a Springboard for Mathematical Philosophy’ on Jan. 6 at the Joint Mathematical Meetings held in Seattle.

In what has become an end-of-semester tradition,  students were able to take a break from studying for finals and spend some time relaxing with pets during HAVOC’s  “Paws to Relax” in the Annex on Dec. 9.

Assistant Professor of Mathematics Courtney Gibbons served on a panel during the 2014 MathFest held Aug. 6-9 in Portland, Ore. The national meeting is sponsored by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA).

Associate Professor of Mathematics Sally Cockburn was awarded a Carl B. Allendoerfer Award by the Mathematical Association of America for her paper "Deranged Socks," co-authored by Dr. Joshua Lesperance, which appeared in the April 2013 issue of Mathematics Magazine.
