Hamilton’s semi-annual Wall Street Association meeting on Oct. 5 featured a discussion on the current state of the capital markets with a panel of alumni experts. The event at the Racquet and Tennis Club was moderated by Susan Skerritt K’77, P’11,  of The Bank of New York Mellon. Panelists include Harold Bogle ’75, P’14, Credit Suisse; Andrew Taylor ’88, JP Morgan Chase Co.; and Jennifer Murphy Hill ’87,  Bank of America Merrill Lynch.

It’s inevitable that at times we can get down on ourselves, daunted by the prospect of what lies ahead. The threat of a double dip recession, prolonged unemployment after graduation, or even just a bad grade on a homework assignment can darken one’s outlook. At these moments, it's important to put things into perspective, as Hamilton Program in New York students learned on Oct. 1 while volunteering at the Bowery Mission, the oldest such establishment in New York City.  

For the past several years, the economic downturn has been making headlines, and so it seems uncommon to study a market specifically for its stability. Yet this is precisely how Mao Ding ’14, a recipient of a 2011 Emerson Summer Grant, plans to spend his summer, researching the reasons behind the surprising steadiness of the Chinese real estate market, which was expected to collapse in 2008 or 2009.

“I don’t feel worthy of speaking to an economics class. I was a history major,” began CBS 60 Minutes producer and Hamilton alumnus Andrew Metz ’91. Formerly a reporter with Newsday covering the Middle East, Metz shared his experiences and observations on the region in Professor of Economics Erol Balkan’s Political Economics of the Middle East class on Tuesday, May 5.

Professor of Economics Erol Balkan gave a talk, "Labor in the Global Economic Crisis," at the 3rd annual workshop on European Working Lives. The workshop was titled "European Working Lives in Crisis" and was sponsored jointly by Working Lives Research Institute-London Metropolitan University and Istanbul Bilgi University in Istanbul, June 4-5.

Hamilton College's highest awards for teaching were presented on May 8 to four faculty members. Professor of Economics Erol Balkan, Katherine Kuharic, the Kevin W. Kennedy Associate Professor of Art, Assistant Professor of Art Rebecca Murtaugh and Dave Thompson, director of the Fitness and Dance Center and Wellness Programs and professor of physical education, were honored with teaching awards. In addition, Professor of Anthropology Bonnie Urciuoli received the Sidney Wertimer Award from Hamilton's Student Assembly.
