Zander Harpel ’23, Jacob Circelli ’20, Stephanie Wu ’21, and Professor of Biology Wei-Jen Chang are co-authors of an article that was recently published by PLOS ONE.

Participating in the Digestive Disease Summer Research Program at Massachusetts General Hospital this summer has solidified Ishan Bhatia’s ’20 desire to conduct cancer research and attend medical school.

This summer, Tara Cicic ’18 will be spending a good amount of time in Grant Garden, collecting samples from Professor Percy Saunders' peonies and genotyping them.

Kassandra Zaila ’15 was the lead author of an article published last week in the journal Frontiers of Microbiology. The article was based on research supported by the Casstevens Family Fund.

Sidney Wertimer Associate Professor for Excellence in Advising and Mentorship Wei-Jen Chang published a chapter in Biocommunication of Ciliates, released recently by Springer. “Interactions Between Parasitic Ciliates and Their Hosts: Ichthyophthirius multifiliis and Cryptocaryon irritans as Examples” was co-authored by Kassandra Zaila ’15 and Deanna Cho ’15.

Zaila showcased her senior thesis findings in an oral presentation called, “Diversities of endosymbiotic Rickettsia in the fish parasite Ichthyophthirius multifiliis.”

Biology majors Abbas Khan’18, Suxian (Suzy) Lin’18, and Angel Pichardo’17, along with biochemistry major Katherine (Katie) Guzzetta’18 spent the summer exploring the application of nanoparticles in biotechnology at the National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) in Taiwan. The research is under the supervision of Associate Professor of Biology Wei-Jen Chang and in collaboration with Professor Zung-Hang Wei’s mechanical engineering lab at NTHU. In addition to the academic challenge, the research group has described the experience as a cultural adventure.

An article titled “Molecular Genetic Diversity and Characterization of Conjugation Genes in the Fish Parasite Ichthyophthirius multifiliis,” by Associate Professor of Biology Wei-Jen Chang, along with six Hamilton students and recent graduates, appears in the May issue of Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution.

Elisabeth MacColl ’16 and Tshering Sherpa ’16, along with Associate Professor of Biology Wei-Jen Chang, presented a talk and poster at the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) Ciliate Molecular Biology Conference held July 7-13 in Steamboat Springs, Colo.

Associate Professor of Biology Wei-Jen Chang and Ke Xu ’11 were among authors of an article published in the journal Gene. The article, “Copy number variations of 11 macronuclear chromosomes and their gene expression in Oxytricha trifallax,” appeared in Gene, Volume 505, Issue 1, 15 August 2012, Pages 75-80.  Xu majored in biochemistry and mathematics at Hamilton and is now a research technician at the Molecular Cytology Core Facility in Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
