The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has awarded Hamilton College a second $800,000 grant for its Digital Humanities Initiative (DHi). DHi is a research and teaching collaboration in which new media and computing technologies are used to promote humanities-based research, scholarship and teaching – including curriculum development – across the liberal arts.  The Mellon Foundation awarded the DHi its first grant in 2010.

Genesee Lights, a  short documentary film that was a collaboration of students and faculty from Hamilton College, Utica College, the Digital Humanities Initiative, and the Levitt Center, will be screened as part of the Unspoken Human Rights Film Festival on Saturday, Oct. 19, at 2 p.m., at the Uptown Theater in Utica.

Poet Agha Shahid Ali taught at Hamilton for only five years, but in that short time he established lasting connections and friendships at the college. For this reason, the Agha Shahid Ali Literary Trust donated his collection of manuscripts, letters, and other writings to Hamilton after his death in 2001. This summer, Will Newman ’14 is working with Burke Library’s Special Collections to organize the materials so that they are accessible to scholars, ensuring that Shahid’s legacy at Hamilton lives on.

Angel David Nieves, associate professor of Africana studies and co-director of Hamilton’s Digital Humanities Initiative, recently attended the Summer Institute for Advanced Topics in Digital Humanities. The three-week program was supported by a National Endowment for the Humanities grant.

Hamilton’s project to digitally archive video-taped readings, personal documents, letters and manuscripts of the celebrated Kashmiri-American poet Agha Shahid Ali (1949-2001) was featured in The Kashmir Reader.

An article written by several members of the Hamilton community was published in the May issue of The SAA Archaeological Record, the magazine of the Society for American Archaeology.

Angel David Nieves, associate professor of Africana studies and co-director of the Digital Humanities Initiative, gave the opening keynote address on Feb. 19 at Austin College’s Digital Humanities Colloquium.

Independent French filmmaker Armel Hostiou will screen his latest production, Rives (“Day” in English), on Thursday, Oct. 25, at 7:30 p.m., in the Red Pit. The film is spoken in Bosnian, French and Urdu with English subtitles and runs approximately 75 minutes; Hostiou will answer questions after the showing.

The Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) and Vanderbilt University have established a committee to examine emerging national-scale digital projects and their potential to help transform higher education in terms of scholarly productivity, teaching, cost-efficiency and sustainability.  President Joan Hinde Stewart has been appointed to this group, the Committee on Coherence at Scale for Higher Education, which comprises college and university presidents and provosts, deans, university librarians and association heads.
