  • Throughout the spring semester, students of Chinese 495 Language Practicum are participating in a BOCES-sponsored program that supports Chinese language instruction in local schools. The program, which collaborates with the Oneida-Herkimer-Madison Board of Cooperative Educational Services, is funded through a U.S. Department of Education Foreign Language Assistance Program (FLAP) grant.

  • Hong Gang Jin, the William R. Kenan Professor of Chinese and director of Associated Colleges in China Program, has been appointed chair of the AP Chinese Development Committee for 2010-2013.

  • Twenty-nine Chinese concentrators met with Bob Delaney ’79 and John Rice ’78, charter trustees of Hamilton College, for an informal conversation about their future careers on March 5. Delaney joined Crestview Partners in 2007 after retiring from Goldman Sachs in 2003 where he served in a variety of leadership positions. Rice currently serves as vice chairman of GE and president & CEO of GE Technology Infrastructure.

  • Professor of Chinese De Bao Xu published an article, "New Technology for Language Instruction and Film Studies-Combination of DVD with PowerPoint Presentation," in Studies on Teaching Chinese Under Different Circumstances, (ed., the Center of Chinese Studies, Beijing Language and Culture University; pub., Press for Researches on Foreign Language Teaching, Beijing, 2010. )

  • De Bao Xu, professor of Chinese, is collaborating with the Oneida-Herkimer-Madison Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) on a grant-funded project to support Chinese language instruction in elementary schools. The project is funded by a three-year U. S. Department of Education Foreign Language Assistance Program (FLAP) grant.

  • Hong Gang Jin, the William R. Kenan Professor of East Asian Languages and Literatures, recently published an article in Journal of Chinese Teaching in the World (JCTW). The article, “Effects of Selective Attention and Noticing the Gap in CFL Acquisition of Chinese Manner Complement of ‘De’” was co-authored by Yin Zhang, ACC field director in Beijing. JCTW is a major peer-reviewed journal in the CFL field.

  • Along with classmates from more than 20 other colleges and universities, Hamilton students currently studying abroad with the Associated Colleges in China (ACC) program recently traveled to Xi’an, one of the four ancient capitals of China. In addition to viewing the Terracotta Warriors, one of China’s most famous attractions, students also had the chance to explore the Muslim Quarter, an area of the city made distinctive more than 1000 years ago by Xi’an’s status as the eastern starting point of the Silk Road.

  • Hong Gang Jin, the William R. Kenan Professor of East Asian Languages and Literatures, gave a keynote speech at the Associated Colleges of the South (ACS) Second Faculty Conference on Chinese Studies on Oct. 16 at Spelman College. Her talk was titled " A New Chinese Studies Model in a Changing World: The Hamilton and ACC Experience."

  • Professor of Chinese De Bao Xu assumed the editorship of Journal of Technology and Chinese Language Teaching in October. The journal is published twice a year and is affiliated with the organization of Technology and Chinese Language Teaching. Xu was chosen as editor at the 5th International Conference and Workshops on Technology and Chinese Language Teaching held at the University of Macau in June.

  • Professor of Chinese Hong Gang Jin gave a workshop on CFL Classroom Elicitation and Teachers' Questioning Strategies at Arizona State University on Sept. 18. The workshop was jointly sponsored by ASU's Chinese Language Flagship Program, the ASU Chinese Program, the ASU Confucius Institute, and the Chinese School of Greater Phoenix Area.
