Professor of History Shoshana Keller has published “The Puzzle of Manual Harvest in Uzbekistan: Economics, Status and Labour in the Khrushchev Era,” in Central Asian Survey Vol. 34, No. 3(Summer 2015): 296–309. The article deals with the economic and cultural roots of Uzbekistan’s practice of forcing hundreds of thousands of children every year to harvest cotton by hand.

Professor of History Shoshana Keller was invited to give the keynote address for the annual conference of OASIES (Organization for the Advancement of Studies of Inner Asian Societies), a joint New York University-Columbia University graduate student organization.

Hamilton College has announced the members of the Search Committee that will recommend the college’s next president to the Board of Trustees and created a website to report on the committee’s progress. The college is seeking a president to succeed Joan Hinde Stewart, who announced her decision to retire on June 30, 2016.

Professor of History Shoshana Keller gave a talk on "The Puzzle of Child Labor in Uzbekistan" on March 3 at Colgate University. This was a presentation of research on the economic and social roots of the Uzbek use of coerced child labor to harvest cotton every fall. Her talk was sponsored by Colgate's Russian and Eurasian Studies program

Professor of History Shoshana Keller is presenting a series of book discussions at the Utica Public Library from Sept. 25 to Nov. 20 as part of the Let’s Talk About It: Muslim Journeys, a series made possible through a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities in cooperation with the American Library Association.

On September 10, Hamilton College, the United States of America, and the world turned their eyes toward Syria. While President Obama addressed the topic on national TV, Hamilton History Professor Shoshana Keller, Visiting Instructor of Critical Languages Mireille Koukjian, and former U.S. Ambassador Edward Walker, Jr. ’62 hosted a panel discussion: What’s Going on in Syria.

A panel of Hamilton College faculty experts will discuss “What’s Going on in Syria,” on Tuesday, Sept. 10, at 8 p.m., in the Red Pit (room 127), KJ.  The panel will feature former U.S. Ambassador Edward Walker, Jr., Professor of History Shoshana Keller, and Visiting Instructor of Critical Languages Mireille Koukjian. The discussion is free and open to the public.
