  • Hong Gang Jin, the William R. Kenan Professor of East Asian Languages and Literatures, recently published an article in Journal of Chinese Teaching in the World (JCTW). The article, “Effects of Selective Attention and Noticing the Gap in CFL Acquisition of Chinese Manner Complement of ‘De’” was co-authored by Yin Zhang, ACC field director in Beijing. JCTW is a major peer-reviewed journal in the CFL field.

Kenan Professor of East Asian Languages and Literatures, gave a keynote speech at the Associated Colleges of the South (ACS) Second Faculty Conference on Chinese Studies on Oct. 16 at Spelman College. Her talk was titled " A New Chinese Studies Model in a Changing World: The Hamilton and ACC Experience."

  • Professor of Chinese De Bao Xu assumed the editorship of Journal of Technology and Chinese Language Teaching in October. The journal is published twice a year and is affiliated with the organization of Technology and Chinese Language Teaching. Xu was chosen as editor at the 5th International Conference and Workshops on Technology and Chinese Language Teaching held at the University of Macau in June.

  • Hamilton students Ashley Chang ’10, Chelsea Stone ’10 and John Garrison ’10, along with 13 other students selected nationally, were awarded grants to participate in Associated Colleges in China (ACC) Field Studies program this summer. The program’s purpose was to help students who have previously studied abroad in a language-intensive program in China retain their high level of Chinese ability. It also aimed to help American students develop a better understanding of rural China and the China that is situated “outside of study-abroad programs.” For seniors Chang, Stone and Garrison, this seemed like a deal too good to be true.

The article, “Participatory Learning in Internet Web Technology: A Study of Three Web Tools in the Context of CFL Learning,” explores Chinese language learning and instruction within a technology-rich, collaborative and participatory learning environment.

  • Associate Professor of East Asian Languages and Literatures Masaaki Kamiya and Akemi Matuya of Takachiho University in Japan were invited to present at a poster session of the Japanese Society for Language Sciences at Tokyo Denki University, on July 4- 5.

  • De Bao Xu, professor of Chinese, was invited to give a talk (co-authored with Hong Gang Jin) titled "Evaluation and Measurement of Participation and Interactivity in Participatory Web Tools" at ICICE 2009, the 6th International Conference on Internet Chinese Education, Taipei, Taiwan, June 19-21. President of Republic of China Yingjiu Ma delivered the welcome speech at the opening ceremony of the conference, which welcomed more than 500 professionals.

  • Hong Gang Jin, the William R. Kenan Professor of East Asian Languages and Literatures, will serve as president of the National Council of Less Commonly Taught Languages (NCOLCTL) for 2008-2009 and 2009-2010. She was previously vice-president. Jin will work with an executive board of seven members and 18 delegate assembly representatives of different language associations.
