Still highly controversial, China’s One-Child Policy has had many effects on the population. One of the least-known is what Olivia Lin ’12 calls “left-behind parents,” or parents who are left in China because their only child is studying in another country. Guided by Assistant Professor of East Asian Languages and Literatures Zhuoyi Wang, Lin is filming a documentary about left-behind parents through an Emerson grant.

Professor of Chinese De Bao Xu gave the keynote speech at TCLT6, the 6th International Conference and Workshops on Technology and Chinese Language Teaching in the 21st Century, held at the Ohio State University on June 12-14. His talk was titled “Assessment of Participatory Learning Tools and Selection of Virtual Classroom Software (VCS).”

Hong Gang Jin, the William R. Kenan Professor of East Asian Languages and Literatures, published an article titled “Task Complexity and its Effects on Interaction & Production: An Experimental Study of Task-based Instruction” in the May issue of the Journal of the Chinese Language Teachers Association (JCLTA). The article presents the results of her study about “the effect of task complexity on language and interaction in a Chinese as a foreign language context.”

Associate Professor of East Asian Languages and Literatures Masaaki Kamiya recently gave an invited talk, “Japanese children's interpretation of numerals; pragmatically derived vs. lexical ones,” at the Department of Linguistics at Cornell University.

Asian Studies Postdoctoral Fellow and Visiting Assistant Professor of Comparative Literature Anna Oldfield has been awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to the Kazakh University of International Relations and World Languages in Almaty.

Associate Professor of Japanese Kyoko Omori presented a paper titled “The Benshi as a Modernist: Tokugawa Musei and Psychological Films of the Early Twentieth Century” at the 50th annual meeting of the Society for Cinema and Media Studies in Los Angeles in March.

Masaaki Kamiya, associate professor of East Languages and Literatures, recently served on a panel to select 30 recipients for the Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program at the Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC). The CLS Program is funded by the U.S. Department of State and provides fully funded intensive summer institutes for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to participate in group language programs overseas.

“Benshi” Sakamoto Raiko, a performance artist who provides live narrations for silent films, will perform on Wednesday, Feb. 10, at 6 p.m. in the KJ Auditorium. The two films to be shown will be Jirokichi the Rat (1931) and Kid Commotion (1935). A panel discussion with Visiting Professor of Film Studies Scott MacDonald and Associate Professor of East Asian Languages and Literature Kyoko Omori will follow the film. The event is free and open to the public.
