  • Like many cities, Boston encourages bicycling as an alternative mode of transportation that’s good for one’s health and for the environment.  To help encourage bike-riding cities must implement bike-friendly features such as bike lanes and racks. The Boston Cyclists Union helps make that city conducive to bicycling, and Molly Haughey ’12 was a summer intern there, writing articles for the organization’s newsletter and creating an informational video about the Union.

  • The General Electric (GE) board of directors has named Hamilton alumnus and trustee John G. Rice ’78 as head of global operations. Rice, a GE vice chairman since 2005, will be in charge of GE’s growth outside the United States. The appointment is effective Jan. 1, 2011, and Rice will relocate to Hong Kong, according to a GE press release.

Blake Darcy ’78 has shown that companies work better when alliances are strong; he has hired two Hamilton students, Adam Vorchheimer ’11 and Anne Vilsoet ’11, as interns at his growing investment firm Formula Investing.

  • Twenty-nine Chinese concentrators met with Bob Delaney ’79 and John Rice ’78, charter trustees of Hamilton College, for an informal conversation about their future careers on March 5. Delaney joined Crestview Partners in 2007 after retiring from Goldman Sachs in 2003 where he served in a variety of leadership positions. Rice currently serves as vice chairman of GE and president & CEO of GE Technology Infrastructure.

  • A portrait of Martin Luther King, Jr. painted by Kirkland alumna Raye Leith K'78 (aka Deb Osserman) recently appeared in a photograph in The New York Times accompanying an article about  the Obama family's volunteer service at SOME (So That Others Might Eat) in Washington, D.C. on the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. In the photograph, the president is shown next to the portrait as he is greeting and serving the homeless.
