  • Matthew Zeller '04 is the Democrat’s choice to run in a special election in the 29th Congressional District. The election will replace the seat of Democrat Eric Massa who resigned in March. If such an election is called, Zeller will run against Republican Tom Reed, the former mayor of Corning.

  • Ketura Brown '04 will deliver the keynote address at the Robert Garrett Scholarship Banquet on April 18 at the Holiday Inn in New Hartford, New York. Brown, a recipient of the scholarship when she was a student at Hamilton, is currently finishing her first year of graduate studies at Tufts University’s Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. There she is focusing on security studies, conflict management and humanitarian affairs.

  • Hamilton College will host a panel discussion, “The Way Forward in Afghanistan,” on Monday, March 1, at 7:30 p.m., in the Kirner-Johnson Auditorium. Panelists will include former U.S. Ambassador and Christian A. Johnson Distinguished Professor of Global Political Theory Ned Walker ’62, First Lieutenant Matthew Zeller ‘04, and Hamilton student Max Currier ‘10. The discussion is free and open to the public.

  • Max Currier ’10 is looking for a way to increase the effectiveness of political restructuring in Afghanistan – as long as it works, and works well. He supports Provincial Reconstruction Teams (PRTs), joint civil-military teams designed to extend the Afghan Central Government from Kabul (the capital) to Afghanistan’s 32 provinces. His goal this summer is to examine the role and efficacy of PRTs in Afghanistan.

  • Associate Professor of Economics Ann Owen and Rongling You '04 published "Growth, attitudes towards women, and women's welfare," in the February issue of Review of Development Economics. Using a large cross-section of countries, this research provides evidence that as per capita income rises within a country, attitudes towards women become more progressive. This paper also demonstrates the importance of progressive attitudes towards women in generating growth and shows the existence of a gender-equity poverty trap when people do not devote enough resources to educating women.

  • Jennifer Sunderlin '04 was recently appointed to serve on the Board of Directors of the Girl Scouts of Northeastern New York. Sunderlin graduated with a double major in Government and Theatre. At Hamilton, she was a member of Gamma Xi and Special K. After graduation, she attended Albany Law School of Union University and earned her Juris Doctor in 2007.
