Lisa Trivedi, the Christian A. Johnson Excellence in Teaching Professor of History, recently presented an invited lecture on “Housing for an Industrial Working Class: Ahmedabad, 1920-1950” at Emory University.

Professor of Anthropology Chaise LaDousa recently edited Language and Schooling in India and Sri Lanka: Language Medium Matters, a special issue of the International Journal of the Sociology of Language (IJSL).

The New York Times “India Ink” blog featured a story on Pranlal Patel and the images he took of Indian women that will be exhibited by the Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art beginning Feb. 1. “A Pioneer of Street Photography Leaves Behind Strong Images of Indian Women,” published on Jan. 30, included interviews with Patel, his family and Professor of History Lisa Trivedi, co-curator of the Wellin show, “Refocusing the Lens: Pranlal K. Patel’s Photographs of Women at Work in Ahmedabad.”

Taking a break from his research in Bodhgaya, India, in January, Assistant Professor of Religious Studies Abhishek Amar met with Professor of French John C. O’Neal and ITS Educational Technologist Ted Fondak.

Studying in India for the fall 2012 semester, Anderson Tuggle ’14 couldn’t have anticipated that the research in which he was engaged would have such relevance months later. Tuggle, who studied India’s Mid-day Meal program and the role of parents, teachers, and local institutions in providing meals, referenced this research in a New York Times letter to the editor.  Published on July 20, the letter was in response to the reported deaths of 22 children in India after they ate contaminated lunches.

While studying abroad in Rajasthan, India, Anderson Tuggle ’14 assumed he would experience a new and unfamiliar culture. He was not aware that he would uncover a chapter of history that is largely forgotten. In his project funded by the Arthur Levitt Public Affairs Center, Tuggle is researching India’s political integration after achieving independence from Britain.

In a lecture on March 5 Sol M. Linowitz Professor of International Affairs Karl F. Inderfurth outlined how and why India may now be poised to become the world’s next great superpower.

Associate Professor of History Lisa Trivedi was invited to present a paper, 'Seeing Women at Work: the Jyoti Sangh and Pranlal Patel in Ahmedabad, 1937," as part of the Madhusudan and Kiran C. Dhar Indian Studies Program at Indiana University on Sept. 20.

Associate Professor of History Lisa Trivedi was invited to speak at Hobart and William Smith Colleges on Nov. 11.  Her talk, "A Photography of Working Ahmedabad: the Jyoti Sangh, Pranlal Patel, and women workers" addressed a series of 70 photographs that Trivedi uncovered during her research in India this past spring.

Associate Professor of History Lisa Trivedi participated in the 40th Annual South Asia Conference at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. She presented a paper titled “A Photography of Working Ahmedabad: the Jyoti Sangh, Pranlal Patel, and women workers.”
