Property developer Stephen Steinberg ’66, a generous supporter of the College, is establishing a $1 million endowment to create the Steinberg-Lalli Scholarship Fund. Students with need who are accepted to Hamilton from the Acton-Boxborough Regional High School, the public secondary school in Steinberg’s community, will be given first consideration for support from this fund. Steinberg’s objective is to support Hamilton’s need-blind initiative and encourage students from the Acton and Boxborough area to apply to the college.

Dean of Admission and Financial Aid Monica Inzer was the focus of a feature article in the spring issue of Inside, the newsletter of the Posse Foundation. “Hamilton Dean Promotes Diversity and Access” praised the College’s need-blind policy, expanded partnership with the Posse program and initiation of the First in the Family project and noted Inzer’s involvement in each.

Students accepted to Hamilton’s class of 2014 will get a chance to determine if the College is a good fit for them when they attend Accepted Student Open House on Monday, April 19. A full day of activities is planned for accepted students and their families in an effort to illustrate all aspects of a typical day at Hamilton.

Dean of Admission Monica Inzer was joined by Audrey Smith, dean of enrollment at Smith College, and Kathleen Kingsbury, education correspondent for The Daily Beast, for a discussion of admission and financial aid issues on public radio station WNYC on March 22. Inzer was questioned about Hamilton’s decision to go need-blind and how the move would expand access to Hamilton.

The Hamilton Board of Trustees’ unanimous vote to adopt a need-blind policy in admission received broad national and local media coverage. Beginning with The New York Times in its print edition and on its education blog "The Choice," news of the policy change spread quickly on Monday, March 8. Both Inside Higher Ed and The Chronicle of Higher Education also released online articles on the decision.

At a time when parents are beginning to question whether they can afford a college education for their children, Hamilton has announced that it will make admission decisions without considering an applicant’s ability to pay. The college already meets the full demonstrated need of every student it accepts and will continue to do so. The new policy at Hamilton, which is known as need-blind admission, is effective with the class currently being admitted for the fall of 2010.
