Professor of English and Creative Writing Doran Larson was invited to serve as respondent on a panel dedicated to Fourth City: Essays from the Prison in America at the Midwest Modern Language Association (M/MLA) Conference held Nov. 13-16 in Detroit.

Professor of English and Creative Writing  Doran Larson has edited a new book Fourth City: Essays from the Prison in America (Michigan State University Press). The book contains 71 essays written by prisoners from across the U.S.

Professor of English and Creative Writing Doran Larson served as commenter on a panel "Neo-Liberal America and the Carceral State" at the 2014 American Historical Association Conference, in January in Washington D.C.

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has awarded Hamilton College a second $800,000 grant for its Digital Humanities Initiative (DHi). DHi is a research and teaching collaboration in which new media and computing technologies are used to promote humanities-based research, scholarship and teaching – including curriculum development – across the liberal arts.  The Mellon Foundation awarded the DHi its first grant in 2010.

An essay by Professor of English and Creative Writing Doran Larson has been published in The Atlantic Monthly online. In “Why Scandinavian Prisons are Superior,” Larson contends that “open” prisons, in which detainees are allowed to live like regular citizens, should be a model for the U.S.

Professor of English and Creative Writing Doran Larson was an invited speaker and panelist at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America Conference on Accompaniment and the Criminal Justice System in Chicago, Jan. 2-4.
