Hamilton College President David Wippman announced the death of Life Trustee Joe Anderson ’44, P’76 in an email to the Hamilton community on July 7.

The National Museum of American History has designated April as Jazz Appreciation Month (JAM). So in the spirit of JAM, Hamilton’s Fillius Jazz Archive is featuring one artist daily on the news site along with that individual’s archived audio interview. Today’s featured artist is Milton F. Fillius, Jr. ’44, GP ’02, H’96, founder of the Jazz Archive.

Patricia Pogue Couper, Hamilton friend, benefactor and widow of alumnus Richard W. Couper ’44, died Monday evening at her home. She was 90.

Among highlights of Fallcoming 2013 was the naming of the Hamilton College Jazz Archive in honor of Milton F. Fillius ’44 and Nelma “Nikki” Fillius. The dedication took place during a performance of World Class Jazz at the Fillius Events Barn on Sept. 27.

“What can higher education learn from libraries?” Members of the Hamilton College community and librarians from the surrounding area gathered in the Kennedy Auditorium on Oct. 10 to find out. Professor R. David Lankes delivered Hamilton’s Couper Phi Beta Kappa Library Lecture, “What Can Higher Education Learn from Libraries?” exploring how library practices can actually inform some of the current debates surrounding higher education.

Professor R. David Lankes of Syracuse University will present the Couper Phi Beta Kappa Library lecture, titled “What Can Higher Education Learn From Libraries?” on Thursday, Oct. 10, at 4:15 p.m., in the Taylor Science Center's Kennedy Auditorium.  Lankes will explore the larger shift in higher education from preparing students for their first job to being an institution of lifelong learning. He will focus on how existing approaches in libraries actually provide models for this transformation.  The event is free and open to the public.

Dan Morgenstern, eight-time Grammy Award winner and recently retired head of Rutgers University's Institute of Jazz Studies, will present the Couper Phi Beta Kappa Library Lecture on Monday, April 8, at 4 p.m., in the Kennedy Auditorium of the Taylor Science Center.  Morgenstern will address the changing nature of acquisitions, access and use of jazz archives, tying in to our own Jazz Archive.  His lecture is free and open to the public.

Hamilton President Joan Hinde Stewart announced in an e-mail to the campus community the death of life trustee James T. Rhind ’44, P ’83 ’85. He died on Jan. 16 at the age of 90.

Kevin Smith '81, Duke University scholarly communications officer, will deliver the Couper Phi Beta Kappa Library Lecture on Thursday, Oct. 6, at 4:15 p.m., in the Bradford Auditorium, KJ.  The lecture, titled “From Schopenhauer to Schwarzenegger: The Impact of Copyright on Art and Scholarship in the Digital Age,” is free and open to the public.
