Life-threatening diseases could become easier to detect thanks to a Hamilton student-faculty research team and its partnership with an internationally recognized biomedical research institute here in Utica.

When the pandemic began, programs that fostered college and community connections also took a hit. Hamilton’s new SciKids YouTube channel offers a remote way to get even more students wondering if science may be in their future.

With representation from Hamilton’s eight major science departments, the Science Research Lab Crawl on Jan. 28 gave students space to learn about student-faculty research opportunities or simply get a better understanding of the science departments.

Hamilton science faculty have been busy the past several weeks sharing their expertise with students much younger than college-age audiences. Elementary school children from Oneida, Clinton, and New Hartford have descended upon the Taylor Science Center for a morning of science exploration over the past four weeks as well as in March during Hamilton’s spring break.

Douglas Weldon, the Stone Professor of Psychology, presented on Jan. 21 in a session titled “Ten Years Later – Did the Science Center Make a Difference?” at the annual meeting of the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AACU) in Washington, D.C.

The dedication of the Edward and Virginia Taylor Science Center was a joyful celebration of the Taylors’ generosity coupled with recognition of Hamilton’s commitment to science education and liberal arts values. The naming ceremony, a highlight of the college’s bicentennial kickoff weekend, was held in the center’s atrium on Friday, Sept. 23.
