The scholarly achievements of female faculty authors in the humanities and social sciences at Hamilton College were celebrated at a book party in the Burke Library this winter. 

A book co-authored by Peter J. Rabinowitz, the Sidney Wertimer Professor of Comparative Literature, was among those selected by Choice as an “Outstanding Academic Title” for 2012.

Alan Cafruny, Henry Bristol Professor of International Affairs, and Ted Lehmann, assistant professor of government, contributed to the recently published Exploring the Global Financial Crisis, volume 18. It is part of the series Advances in International Political Economy, edited by Cafruny and Herman Schwartz (University of Virginia) under the sponsorship of the International Studies Association (Lynne Rienner Publishers, 2013).

In commemoration of the 20th anniversary of Audre Lorde’s death, Visiting Instructor of German & Russian Studies Peggy Piesche published a new anthology, Eurer Schweigen nützt euch nichts:  Audre Lorde und die Schwarze Frauenbewegung in Deutschland (Your Silence Will Not Protect You:  Audre Lorde and the Black Women’s Movement in Germany). The book was launched with a discussion and reading on Nov. 21 in one of the main theaters in Berlin (Volksbühne).

Several Hamilton faculty members contributed to a new book, Pathways to Excellence in Teaching, edited by Ernest H. Williams, the Christian A. Johnson Professor of Biology, and published by The Couper Press.

NATO and the Challenges of Austerity, a book co-authored by Visiting Assistant Professor of Government Calin Trenkov-Wermuth ’00, was recently published by RAND Corporation. Trenkov-Wermuth and his co-authors, F. Stephen Larrabee, Stuart E. Johnson, John Gordon IV, Peter A. Wilson, Caroline Baxter and Deborah Lai, prepared the report for the Office of the Secretary of Defense.

On the Hill: A Bicentennial History of Hamilton College, written by Publius Virgilius Rogers Professor of American History Maurice Isserman, received the 2012 Arline Custer Memorial Award for books from the Mid-Atlantic Regional Archives Conference (MARAC). The award was presented on Oct. 27 in Richmond, Va.

What We Mean by Experience by Professor of Philosophy Marianne Janack was recently published by Stanford University Press.

Standing Our Ground: Women, Environmental Justice, and the Fight to End Mountaintop Removal by Visiting Assistant Professor of Women’s Studies Joyce M. Barry was recently published by Ohio University Press as part of the series on Race, Ethnicity, and Gender in Appalachia.

A book co-authored by Peter Rabinowitz, the Sidney Wertimer Professor of Comparative Literature, was the subject of a positive review in Choice (Oct. 2012). Narrative theory: core concepts and critical debates, by David Herman et. al. ( Ohio State, 2012) is called “a wonderful resource for introducing students to four major approaches to the study of narrative and the major debates on the subject of narrative.”
