On the eve of its 10th anniversary, the Hamilton College Mock Trial team finished third in the Opening Round Championship Series (ORCS) on March 23-25, and qualified for the national championship tournament in April. Team captain Tyler Roberts ’12 won an Outstanding Attorney award and Patrick Bedard ’14 won an Outstanding Witness award.

Hamilton’s Mock Trial team participated in the third annual Colgate Classic at Colgate University on Nov. 5 and 6 and finished in first place, continuing a series of strong performances in the tournament. Ian Thresher ’12, Marta Johnson ’13 and KT Stein ’14 won Outstanding Attorney awards and Emily Tompsett ’13 won an Outstanding Witness award.

Caleb Nelson, the Emerson G. Spies Distinguished Professor of Law and the Class of 1966 Research Professor of Law at the University of Virginia, delivered the fourth annual David Aldrich Nelson Lecture in Constitutional Jurisprudence on Monday, Sept. 19, in the Chapel.

Edith Grossman, an award-winning translator, author and critic, gave the Doris M. and Ralph E. Hansmann Lecture as part of the Humanities Forum Series on Sept. 15. In her lecture, “Why Translation Matters,” Grossman discussed the important role that translators play in fostering dialogue and communicating ideas across cultures.

Members of the Young People’s Project hosted the third semi-annual “Math Bash” on Saturday, Dec. 11, in the Annex.

Dr. Gordon B. Smith, the director of the Walker Institute of International and Area Studies, and Dr. Mark D. Welton, professor of international and comparative law at the United States Military Academy, gave lectures on the roots and effects of corruption in Russia and traditional Islamic law as part of the Arthur Levitt Public Affairs Center’s Security Series. They then joined a panel discussion and answered questions from the audience with Government Professors Charlotte Lee and Nathaniel Richmond.

Dr. Condoleezza Rice gave a lecture and answered questions on foreign policy and her time as Secretary of State under the Bush administration as part of Hamilton College’s Sacerdote Great Names Series on November 1 in the Field House.

Robert Moses ’56 gave a lecture titled “Quality Public Education as a Constitutional Right” as part of the Arthur Levitt Public Affairs Center’s Inequality and Equity Program.

Louis Menand, the Anne T. and Robert M. Bass Professor of English and American Literature at Harvard University, gave a lecture titled “What Every College Graduate Needs to Know” as part of Hamilton’s Fallcoming Weekend on Oct. 8 in the Chapel.

Jay Sekulow, the chief counsel for the American Center for Law & Justice, gave the third annual David Aldrich Nelson Lecture in Constitutional Jurisprudence on Sept. 17 in the Chapel. He talked about the importance of the freedom of speech and freedom of religion in American society.
