After several last-minute changes of plan, an intrepid group of Hamilton Outing Club members spent the first week of spring break backpacking and winter camping in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. The plan for the trip originally involved heading south in pursuit of sunshine and warmer weather but as the break drew closer, the forecast deteriorated. With several of inches of wet, slushy snow and shiver-inducing temperatures called for in the Smoky Mountains as far south as North Carolina, trip leader Samuel Bernstein ’17 made the call to head elsewhere.

Syracuse University Professor of Geology Donald Siegel recently delivered a wide-ranging talk on his experience researching the impacts of hydraulic fracturing (hydrofracking) and the relationship between scientific research, media and public policy.

Hundreds of Hamilton students, faculty and staff joined with students from Colgate University, Utica College and members of the local community for a rally on Nov. 15. The rally was planned in conjunction with a nationwide student movement called “Our Power Walkout,” with marches scheduled to take place at more than a dozen other institutions across the country.

The Hamilton Outing Club held its second leader training course Nov. 5 and 6. The two-day class – in conjunction with the Wilderness First Aid course – qualifies students to lead hiking and backpacking trips.

More than 30 Hamilton Outing Club leaders spent last weekend developing the skills to manage backcountry medical emergencies during a Wilderness First Aid (WFA) course taught by instructors from Stonehearth Open Learning Opportunities.

Warm sunny weather and beautiful fall foliage made for an unforgettable fall break for members of the Hamilton Outing Club. The short vacation saw Outing Club trips hiking in the Adirondacks and sea kayaking in the Atlantic off the coast of Maine while other members used the break to tackle personal outdoors challenges throughout the Northeast.

Eight paddlers from Hamilton College’s Marathon Canoe Racing team took part in the annual Long Lake Long Boat Regatta on Sept. 24. Hamilton reclaimed the cup this year, prevailing over reigning champions from Paul Smith’s College by a narrow 5-second margin.
