A highlight for many during Fallcoming Weekend was the talk by Ambassador Thomas Pickering. In front of a packed audience in the Chapel, Ambassador Pickering outlined in detail the background and discussions that have led to the Iran Deal.

Wednesday, April 15 marked the 150th anniversary of the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. Hamilton students, participating in the Program in Washington semester, decided to spend their morning at the historic Ford’s Theatre. The visit included time in the theatre’s museum as well as attending a one-act play.

Hamilton’s Levitt Leadership Institute participants spent their first week of spring break refining leadership skills and networking in Washington, D.C. Expanding their networking beyond the governmental and non-profit agencies with which they met, the students seized the opportunity to gather with Hamilton alumni and fellow students participating in the semester-long D.C. program.

As the sun shone on 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, six Hamilton students and their professor lined up at the security gate preparing to cross the threshold of one of the most iconic homes in our nation’s capital. More security checks followed but finally, we were permitted access. After passing through the large doors into the building we entered wide white halls with high ceilings and a grandiose stairway that immediately made a guest feel that “they had arrived.”

Students participating in Hamilton’s Program in Washington, D.C. recently visited the Newseum. The Newseum, featuring many interactive exhibits, is the museum dedicated to the history of news.  Its seven-floors are made up of thematically organized theaters and galleries.

A little real world experience before graduation gives students a definite advantage and Hamilton’s Program in Washington D.C. allows students to do just that. In addition to taking classes and writing a thesis, each of the eight students on the program heads to the office each morning, fulfilling the internship portion of the experience.

Besides having the opportunity to study a different culture and history in the beautiful city of Madrid, Hamilton’s Academic Year in Spain (HCAYS) provides students the chance to get out and explore Madrid, Spain or the rest of Europe.  With classes taking place Monday through Thursday, most weekends are free for students to travel with friends or explore Madrid on their own. Participants also look forward to the three HCAYS-organized trips that take them to cities and towns where they can immerse themselves in the culture and not feel so much like a tourist.

Almost every student dreams of the opportunity to study abroad and at Hamilton it is not only possible – it’s encouraged. Hamilton’s four programs in China, India, France and Spain are popular, not only with Hamilton students, but also with students from other small liberal arts colleges. This past week the 20 students participating in Hamilton’s program in Madrid, Spain, traveled to Galicia.

Jessica Moulite ’14 has always been interested in journalism. She’s drawn to the concept of using media as a platform to contact and connect a group of people. In the fall, Moulite is one step closer to her dream as she enrolls in the University of Southern California’s prestigious Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism.

Felipe Garcia’s interest in animals took a more serious turn as he prepared to begin college.  Garcia has long been passionate about animals, spending his summers working at Jungle Island, an interactive zoo located in Miami, Fla. During the summers of his sophomore and junior years at Hamilton Garcia attended the University of Pennsylvania Veterinary Medicine Program for undergraduates.
