Medical professionals Kevin Graepel ’11, Christine Laine ’83, and Jack Syage ’76 shared perspectives on the development of vaccines for COVID-19 in a Zoom event on Nov. 10. The event was moderated by Dianne-Lee Ferguson ’22 and Alyssa Bonanno ’21, and attended by both students and alumni.

The newly formed Hamilton Coalition for Justice and Democracy, born of a commitment to protect America’s democracy, held its inaugural meeting on Nov. 5 in response to President Trump’s false and problematic claims about the 2020 election. Thursday evening’s event attracted around 80 participants, including both students and faculty.

Utica City Court Judge Ralph Eannace, marriage and family therapist Kevin Lewis, and Hamilton Director of Community Standards Catherine Berryman discussed the question “How are We Handling Domestic Violence and Mental Health Interventions?” in a webinar moderated by Hamilton Professor Frank Anechiarico on Nov. 4.

Hamilton Government Professor Phil Klinkner, along with several other faculty from the Government Department, hosted live election coverage discussing the presidential race and its potential implications on Election Day, Nov. 3. Klinkner also provided analysis of incoming data and results with assistance from students in his “Political Parties and Elections” course.

Yusef Salaam, one of the five boys wrongfully charged in the 1989 Central Park jogger case, spoke in a webinar on Oct. 29 as part of the C. Christine Johnson Voices of Color Lecture Series.

Hamilton College Professor Doran Larson, Nation of Islam representative Courtney Muhammad, and re-entry educator Lee Carr spoke in a webinar moderated by Mohawk Valley Community College Trustee Tony Colón on Oct. 28. This was the sixth installment of eight webinars in the series “Racial Justice and Criminal Justice Reform in Oneida & Herkimer Counties.”

Oneida County (N.Y.) District Attorney Scott McNamara and Save Our Streets Program Director Patrick Johnson discussed how race and poverty intersect with the criminal justice system in a webinar moderated by SUNY Polytechnic Institute Professor Ronni Tichenor on Oct. 21. This was the latest in the collaboration with Colleges and Community for Unity and Change Lecture Series sponsored by Hamilton’s Levitt Center Law and Justice Lab.

Herkimer County Community College Professor Mark Polkosnik, Utica College Professor Bernie Hyman, and Attorney Steve Lockwood discussed the use of force in policing in an October 14 webinar moderated by Hamilton Associate Professor of Government Gbemende Johnson.

New York State Senator Rachel May joined Hamilton students and members of the local community for a town hall meeting about climate justice on Oct. 8, organized by Sunrise Hamilton. May answered a number of questions on bills, policies, and initiatives related to the event’s broad theme of climate justice.

Utica College Professor Anthony Baird, Hamilton Professor Todd Franklin, and SUNY Polytechnic Institute Professors Mark Montgomery and Ronni Tichenor spoke in a webinar addressing “What is Systemic, or Institutional Racism?” on Sept. 30. This event was part of an ongoing series focused on Racial Justice and Criminal Justice Reform in Oneida and Herkimer Counties.
