  • Doug Lemov '90, a former educational consultant and teacher, and now a Managing Director at Uncommon Schools, is the subject of an article in the New York Times Magazine. The article discusses the challenges facing the education system and teacher training in the United States.  Helping teachers improve is a critical part of making American schools better. Remedies have been proposed, but schools continue to fail.  The article highlights Lemov's experiences in America's educational system as both a teacher and a consultant, and discusses his work in studying how teachers succeed in the inner city and what makes great teachers different from the rest.

  • Sarah Felder '07 is First Mate on the historic schooner Adventuress. She is starting her fifth season with Sound Experience, a group that seeks to teach people about the Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington. This is Felder’s third time taking on the role of First Mate.

  • The works of artist Paul Lloyd Sargent ‘93 can be found in multiple exhibitions in New York State and New England this spring. An exhibition Sargent curated, titled “Precious Cargo” at the University at Buffalo Art Gallery, is running from March 18 to May 15. It is a group exhibition of contemporary art and design projects that address the issues of international shipping and transport and possible local and regional alternatives. He is currently the 2010 artist in residence at the gallery.

  • Matthew Zeller '04 is the Democrat’s choice to run in a special election in the 29th Congressional District. The election will replace the seat of Democrat Eric Massa who resigned in March. If such an election is called, Zeller will run against Republican Tom Reed, the former mayor of Corning.

  • Gordon Kaye '74 will be one of four industry professionals to judge Hudson Valley Wine Magazine’s first-ever "The Face of the Hudson Valley Wine" Label Competition.  The competition is currently accepting entries from all winemakers in the Hudson Valley American Viticultural Area.  Awards will go to the best-designed labels in a series of categories, including "Best Type Design," "Best Use of Illustration or Photography," "Most Memorable Label" and more.  Judging will take place in May 2010 and the winning labels in all categories will be published in the Summer 2010 issue of Hudson Valley Wine Magazine.

  • Ryan Serhant '06 was recently the subject of a Parade.com interview titled "Ryan Serhant Gets Hands-On With AT&T." Serhant, a former star on As the World Turns, has some of the most famous hands in the world. He currently works as a hand model for the AT&T “hands” campaign, in which his painted hands are shown holding AT&T’s electronic devices. Italian artist, Guido Daniele, paints Serhant’s hands with intricate images of scenes from all over the world, including the Great Wall of China and the Rialto Bridge. Serhant says the AT&T job is “by far one of the most rewarding just because of its success and its exposure.” He enjoys seeing his ad on a billboard and being able to say, “Those are my hands.”

  • Brian A. Caswell '73 will receive the Arthur J. Dixon Public Service Award on May 13.  The award recognizes CPAs who are regularly engaged in community, charitable or civic activities.  Caswell, a CPA in Phoenix, NY, serves as president of Caswell & Associates CPA, P.C, which celebrates its 75th anniversary this year.

  • Kat McGrory '05 was a recipient of the 2009 National Awards for Education Reporting, a prestigious national competition for education writing.  She was awarded second place in the “Large Media- Series or Group of Articles” category for her three part series, titled “School on the Brink,” for the Miami Herald about Florida’s failing school systems.   The contest rewards the best education reporting in print and broadcast media.  A total of 334 entries were judged in this year’s contest.

  • After three years working for WWNY 7 News, Alexandra Field '06 is saying goodbye. During her time at the Central New York based station, Field worked as a general assignment reporter and, most recently, an anchor for the 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. news hours. During her time at WWNY, Field was recognized for her work with a Syracuse Press Club Award and received an award from the Associated Press for outstanding spot news coverage for her work on the Academy Street apartment building fire. Field will move to WRGB, the CBS affiliate in Albany, where she recently accepted a reporting position.
