Two Hamilton seniors and a recent alumna have been awarded Fulbright Teaching Assistantships to Spain for the 2021-22 academic year. Tim Derby ’21 and Gianni Hill ’21, along with Loren Rodriguez ’20, will teach English under the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government.

Hamilton has announced plans for an in-person commencement ceremony for members of the Class of 2021 on Saturday, May 22, at 10 a.m., in the Margaret Bundy Scott Field House. Bachelor’s degrees will be awarded to 484 graduates. Due to current New York State restrictions on public gatherings, attendance will be limited to the graduates and those participating in the ceremony.

Jonathan Dong ’21 has been awarded the College’s prestigious Bristol Fellowship to explore The Global Rise in Sustainable Aquaculture by traveling to Mexico, Chile, Kenya, Singapore, the Philippines, and Papua New Guinea.

Buff & Bloom is a plant giving program to support student mental health and overall wellness co-sponsored by the Peer Counselors, the Counseling Center, and the Dean of Students Office. Student organizer Lucas Wright ’21 talks here about the wildly popular program in which 800 students picked up free plants outside the Annex last week.

Five students were awarded prizes in three categories in the annual Public Speaking Competition that took place this year over Zoom. Presentations were either persuasive or informative in nature, and in one category, students addressed an assigned topic.

Amy Harff ’21, Jiin Jeong ’21, and Liam Prum ’21 have been named Watson Fellows, with each receiving a $36,000 stipend to pursue a “year of independent, purposeful exploration” abroad. The prestigious Thomas J. Watson Fellowship is awarded to graduating seniors nominated by one of 41 partner institutions.

Six faculty members were approved for tenure by Hamilton’s Board of Trustees at its recent meeting. They include Catherine Beck (geosciences), Erica De Bruin (government), Susan Jarosi (art history), Jaime Kucinskas, (sociology), Alexandra Plakias (philosophy), and Jesse Weiner (classics).

Hamilton’s inaugural ALEX (Advise, Learn, EXperience) advisors are preparing to launch the new program that links advising, academic support, and experiential learning. The advisors are Dean of Engaged Education Kathy Wolfe, Kevin Alexander ’13, Janine Oliver, and Hannah Stubley ’12.
