Professor of Geology Eugene Domack presented his research on the Antarctic Larsen B ice shelf at a meeting of the American Geophysical Union in San Francisco and was quoted in Associated Press and Knight Ridder articles.

Assistant Professor of English Dana Luciano gave two conference papers in December: "Bio-Politics and Necro-Erotics in 19th-Century Queer Female Gothic," for the American Women's Gothic panel at the American Literature Association's 2002 symposium on American Gothic in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico; and "Missing: National Mourning and Cosmopolitan Melancholia after 9/11," for the Altars, Rituals and Testimonies session at the Modern Language Association Convention, New York.

It's the season to give to those in need. The news reports are of soup kitchens struggling to keep up, homeless shelters utilized to capacity and more families seeking assistance. Members of the Hamilton community reach out in many ways. Some contribute through their normal volunteer activities like 4-H or the Scouts, others give individually, and some offices get organized to “adopt a family,” fill food baskets, bake cookies or make donations to local charities.

As the first rabbi to hold the position of Jewish chaplain at Hamilton, Rabbi Yaakov Rapoport hopes to create a greater sense of community among Jewish students and an environment in which they can easily practice their faith.

Associate Professor of Rhetoric and Communication Catherine Kaha published six poems in the journal Qualitative Inquiry (Dec. 2002). These poems were drawn from an unpublished manuscript titled Threshold: Collected Poems, 1996 - 2001.

Visiting Assistant Professor of Biology Astrid H. Helfant successfully defended her dissertation titled "The Saccharomyces cerevisiae spindle pole body (SPB) and its importance in maintaining genomic stability via SPB duplication and nuclear positioning," at the University of Amsterdam in The Netherlands.

Hamilton College is closed for the Thanksgiving Recess. Classes resume and offices will re-open on Monday, Dec. 2.

Visiting Assistant Professor of Chemistry Ram Subramaniam published a paper, "Cellular oxidant stress and advanced glycation endproducts of albumin: caveats of the dichlorofluorescein assay" in Archives Biochemistry and Biophysics. His co-authors are Xing-Jun Fan, Vincenzo Scivittaro, Jianqi Yang, Chung-Eun Ha, Charles Petersen, Witold Surewicz, V. Bhagavan, Miriam Weiss, Vincent M. Monnier, at al.

Three Hamilton College students ran the 9th Citizen's Bank Philadelphia Marathon on Sunday, Nov. 24. In a 26.2 mile race with 4,724 competitors, the three students finished in the top 3 percent of this world-class marathon. This top finish qualified the students to run the prestigious Boston Marathon. Chris Dunn '05, 2:53.21 - 6:38 mile pace - 98th overall, Runner-up in the 19 and under age-group Paul Jones '03, 2:56.53 - 6:44 mile pace - 127th overall, 25th in the 20-24 age-group Andrew Matlack '03, 2:56.40 - 6:44 mile pace - 124th overall, 23rd in the 20-24 age-group

Esther Kanipe, Marjorie and Robert W. Ewen Professor of History, was selected for the Speakers in the Humanities Program of the New York Council on the Humanities for 2003-2005. She will offer two lectures: "What is Disability Studies?" and "The Disabled Veteran in the 20th Century: The Wages of Sacrifice." Kanipe will speak about five times per year to various groups around the state.
