Although many Hamilton students just finished arriving on campus for the spring semester, a group of 55 students quickly turned around and boarded a bus late Sunday night for a 24-hour round trip to Washington, D.C., to attend the Inauguration Day ceremony for President Barack Obama’s second term.

As final exams approach, many Hamilton students are facing one last mountain of work before they can head home for the holidays. Perhaps appropriate for this season and providing a welcome break from all the studying, Hamilton welcomed prize-winning author Wade Davis on Dec. 12 to discuss his award-winning work, Into the Silence: The Great War, Mallory, and the Conquest of Everest.

Columbia University historian, professor and author Eric Foner visited Hamilton on Nov. 15  to discuss Abraham Lincoln's atttitudes toward slavery as detailed in his 2010 book The Fiery Trial.

In the last talk of a semester-long series on the election season, The Publius Society invited Professor Phil Klinkner of Hamilton’s Government Department to give his thoughts in “An Election Post-Mortem.”

With the 2012 elections less than two weeks away, Think Tank held a session on Oct. 26 focusing on the timely topic of the presidential election.  Phil Klinkner, the James S. Sherman Professor of Government, was invited to lead a discussion with an audience of students, staff and visiting parents.

Whether it’s through a varsity sport, a cultural diversity club or a service organization, Hamilton students devote both time and energy throughout the year to getting involved in their community. Peter Maher ’13 is no exception and has a unique story to tell. Over the past two years, he has spent more than 30 hours a week interning with the police department in the nearby city of Rome, N.Y.

In the opening lines of his Levitt Center-sponsored talk David Wisner expressed the true nature of his chosen topic by pointing out how the title of his presentation, “The Crisis of the European Union and the future of Greece” could easily be flipped around and still capture the subject matter as “The Crisis of Greece and the future of the European Union.” During his lecture, Wisner would expand upon the international relationships present in the European economic crisis and paint a grim short-term picture for those involved, especially for Greece.

Dietra Harvey grew up in a household where critical citizenship and voting were basic tenets of family life. Today, in the same way she was brought into the voting booth as a young girl by her parents, Harvey carries on the tradition by bringing her own children to the polls every November.

The Hamilton College Democrats is a campus student group that works throughout the school year to promote civic engagement in the Hamilton community as well as support the politics of the Democratic Party. Several members have also taken the opportunity this summer to get involved in the political process through internships and volunteering.
