John Patrick Landers ’95
John Patrick Landers ’95, group sales and client relations manager for the San Francisco Giants baseball team, was born on August 29, 1973, in Washington, DC. The son of John J. and Mary Theresa Lloyd Landers, he grew up in Bethesda, MD, became an Eagle Scout, and was graduated from St. Anselm’s Abbey School in Washington in 1991. He came to College Hill that fall, joined Chi Psi, and went out for track and JV basketball. A member of the varsity swimming team, he also played rugby. As a resident advisor during his junior and senior years, he was affectionately known to his younger charges as “Father Pat.” His Chi Psi brothers particularly remember him for his warmth of personality and infectious grin that always made him “fun to be around.”
Having majored in government and minored in psychology, Patrick Landers left the Hill with his diploma in 1995. He returned home to live for a year while working and finding time to be an Olympic torch escort runner for the 1996 Atlanta summer games. That year, motivated by his spirit of adventure, he drove the new BMW that he had just won in a radio contest out to San?Francisco, CA. There he obtained temporary employment as a seasonal ticket seller for the Giants. Within months after the season’s end, however, he was back with the team — this time permanently, as a ticket sales executive. Appointed group sales manager in 2006, he had in the meantime become an ardent Giants fan and took special pleasure in celebrating their World Series championship in 2010. It reflected his love of sports, “which was second only to his love and devotion to his family and friends.”
On September 20, 2003, Patrick Landers was married to Christine E. Patterson at the Presidio in San Francisco. After living in the city for two years, they moved to nearby Mill Valley, where they began to rear their sons, Aidan, born in 2005, and Ty, born three years later. Throughout those years, Patrick remained close to the College and ever eager to help in arranging local alumni events such as the annual outing at the Giants’?ballpark.
J. Patrick Landers died in San Francisco on December 6, 2011, following a yearlong, valiant battle with lymphoma. He was 38 years old. In addition to his wife and young sons, he is survived by his parents and two sisters, Mary Margaret Landers and Kathryn M. Knowles. Memorial services were held in San Francisco and Washington with several Chi Psi brothers and other Hamilton friends in attendance at the latter. A trust fund has been established for the college education of his sons, who were “the love of Patrick’s’ life.”
