Marvin Richard Kwartler '73

Marvin Richard Kwartler '73, an attorney-at-law, was born on June 15, 1952, in Philadelphia, PA. The elder son of Charles Kwartler, a producer of radio and television commercials, and Diana Kwartler, a hospital administrator, he grew up in New York City, where he was graduated from the prestigious Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan. Marvin Kwartler enrolled at the College in 1969. Highly motivated, he excelled academically, and, despite severe hearing impairment, doggedly persisted to become an effective debater, winning the McKinney Prize speaking contest. He also tried his hand at acting with the Charlatans. A member of Gryphon and known for his wry sense of humor, he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and received his diploma with honors in psychology in 1973.

Marvin Kwartler, meticulous in planning his future, went on to acquire an M.A degree in social science from the University of Chicago in 1974, followed by a J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1977. He returned to Manhattan, where he became associated with the law firm of Kaye, Scholer, Pierman, Hays & Handler. Subsequently employed as an attorney in New York City's Office of Corporation Counsel, he was most recently an appellate attorney in the U.S. Attorney's Office in Manhattan.

Marvin R. Kwartler died on September 2, 2007, as verified by Social Security records. The College has no information on survivors.

Helen Lake ("Holly") Foote Schloerb K'74

Helen Lake ("Holly") Foote Schloerb K'74, a former teacher and devoted wife and mother, was born on November 6, 1951, in Evanston, IL. A daughter of Robert L., a lawyer, and Barbara Austin Foote, she grew up in Chicago's northern suburbs and entered Kirkland College from Glencoe in 1970. While on the Hill she met F. Peter Schloerb '73, and they were married in 1973. That year, she took leave from Kirkland and accompanied her husband to the West Coast, where he pursued graduate studies. She began taking courses at Pitzer College in California and later transferred to Pitzer to complete her undergraduate education and obtain her B.A. degree in 1976.

In 1977, the Schloerbs moved to Amherst, MA, where Peter joined the faculty of the University of Massachusetts. Holly became a teacher in early childhood education programs in Amherst, to which she remained dedicated for many years. In 1999, she concluded her teaching career after 12 years with the Common School's Blue Nursery.

Afflicted with diabetes since childhood, Holly Schloerb bore her health burdens and challenges with customary strength of character and quiet determination. Family and friends knew her as "blessed with unending common sense and an engaging wit," and a generosity of spirit that prompted her without fail to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.

Holly Foote Schloerb died on January 29, 2008, at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, MA, of complications ultimately stemming from diabetes. In addition to her husband, she is survived by their daughter, Amy E. Schloerb '06, and a sister, Marion R. Foote.
