Michael Eberhardt Hull ’94
Michael Eberhardt Hull ’94, was born on March 21, 1971, in Montclair, NJ. The elder son of Barbara E., a boutique owner, and Richard P. Hull, president of an advertising agency, “Matt” Hull was graduated from Morristown-Beard School in Morristown, where he captained the swimming team. He came to Hamilton from Essex Falls, NJ, in 1990 and concentrated in art while minoring in comparative literature. He earned honors in art upon his graduation in 1994.
Matt Hull’s subsequent activities are unknown to the College, except that he took up residence in San Francisco, CA, for a time. Information drawn from online messages of condolence indicates that in 2008 he enrolled in the master of arts in liberal studies program at Dartmouth College, concentrating in creative writing. He greatly impressed fellow students and faculty members not only with his writing ability but also with his personal magnetism. They knew him as a brilliant conversationalist who had a lively sense of humor as well as a caring concern for others. With his writing he had embarked upon a “journey of self-discovery,” leading to a semi-autobiographical novel, Blue Glass.
Following his graduation from the Dartmouth program in 2009, Matthew E. Hull found his way to Savannah, GA, where he intended to “throw himself into his writing.” According to a brief obituary announcement, he died at his home in Savannah on January 26, 2010, at the age of 38. The date has been verified by Social Security records. The College has no information on survivors.
Corwith Davis III ’99
Corwith Davis III ’99, a farm manager and agricultural innovator, was born on February 26, 1977, in Charlottesville, VA. The son of Corwith, Jr., who was also engaged in agriculture, and Cynthia Keller Davis, a clinical social worker, he grew up in Charlottesville, where he played football and lacrosse, and took major roles in dramatic productions at St. Anne’s-Belfield School. He enrolled at Hamilton following his graduation in 1995 and joined Theta Delta Chi. Majoring in history, he took a leave of absence during his junior year to participate for a semester in the Beaver College program at the University of Edinburgh. He left the Hill with his A.B. degree in 1999.
Corwith Davis found employment with Murphy Oil Corp. in New Orleans, LA. He became a start-up manager, merchandising manager, and a member of the company’s business development team. Meanwhile, he attended Tulane University, where he earned a J.D. in 2006 and an M.B.A. in 2010.
During the past two years Corwith Davis was chief operating officer and manager of Inglewood Plantation near Alexandria, LA, a family-owned farm specializing in organic vegetables, pecans, and eggs. With determination and drive, he carried out Inglewood’s commitment to sustainable agriculture and organic farming. His leadership converted the business of pecan production to conform to organic standards, and he initiated “the first large-scale sustainable vegetable operation of its kind in Louisiana,” as reported in his obituary in the New Orleans Times-Picayune. His enthusiastic championship of such efforts was contagious, and it left those around him “rapt with attention and wanting to learn more.”
Firmly believing that Inglewood was part of the larger community, Corwith Davis also devoted himself and his expertise as a volunteer to further the work of AMI kids, dedicated to assisting disadvantaged youngsters, the Central Louisiana Community Foundation, and the Central Louisiana Food Bank. Known for his consideration and concern, as well as his extraordinary sense of humor, he not only turned Inglewood into a business success but also committed it to the welfare of the area beyond its own boundaries.
Corwith Davis III died on August 6, 2012, while hiking on Chimney Top Mountain in North Carolina, at the age of 35. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Kathryn Shellnut Davis; a daughter and a son, Kathryn L. and Corwith Davis IV; and a sister, Caroline F. Davis.
