Kyle Nelson MacCallum ’83
Kyle Nelson MacCallum ’83, the son of Audrey and Nelson MacCallum, grew up in Rochester, NY, where he was born on March 13, 1961. A three-sport athlete at Penfield High School, he played hockey and soccer as well as baseball, in which he was selected for the All-County Team. He entered Hamilton following his graduation from Penfield in 1979 and continued to play those three sports while on the Hill. He especially excelled in baseball and was a strong infielder for the Continentals. A member of Delta Upsilon, he served for a time as its house manager. Easy-going and with a great sense of humor, he was well liked by his fraternity brothers, and he made a considerable impact on the DU house. Carefully balancing social activities with his studies, he concentrated in history and was awarded his diploma in 1983.
Most recently a property development specialist for Crown Castle International, a leading independent owner and operator of shared wireless communication and broadcast infrastructures, Kyle MacCallum handled negotiations for Crown Castle with landowners all over northern New York and eastern Canada. His work also included appearances at municipal public hearings for zoning variance approvals. His public speaking ability and personal charm smoothed the way for Crown Castle to secure difficult cell phone placements, in addition to making him one of the most popular staffers at the Rochester home office. His previous employment had included serving as an editor for a law book publishing company, as executive director of a nonprofit housing cooperative in the Thousand Islands area, and as fair housing officer for Jefferson County, NY.
Hockey was Kyle MacCallum’s lifelong passion, and he continued that interest by coaching youth hockey in Clayton, NY. In 2005, despite all odds, “Coach Kyle” led his team in capturing the New York State junior hockey championship. He was also an avid ornithologist with an encyclopedic knowledge of the indigenous birds of upstate New York. He had a sunny attitude, and his particular gift for story-telling made him a welcome companion and treasured friend .
According to College friends, Kyle MacCallum was playing hockey at a high school rink in Webster, NY, when he collapsed on the ice with a heart attack. He died on November 24, 2009, at Rochester General Hospital. In addition to his parents and his sister, Laurie Rayner, he is survived by a daughter, Maggie MacCallum; a son, Cameron MacCallum; a stepson, Corey Lawrence; and his former wives, Stephanie Lamb MacCallum and Virginia MacCallum, both of whom had remained close to him.
Andrew Campbell Miller ’84
Andrew Campbell Miller ’84, long employed as an analyst and editor in the paper and forest products field, grew up in Niagara Falls, NY, where was born on September 9, 1962. A son of John D., an industrial project manager, and Adrienne Campbell Miller, he early evidenced his athletic prowess playing in the junior division of the Niagara Amateur Hockey League. A team captain, he garnered two most valuable player awards. “Drew” Miller entered Hamilton in 1980, following his graduation from Niagara Falls High School. While on the Hill he played junior varsity and intramural hockey as well as softball and basketball. A member of Delta Upsilon, he concentrated in American Studies and was graduated in 1984.
After leaving the Hill, Drew Miller moved to Washington, DC, where he became production manager for General Health, Inc., a small health risk appraisal firm. In 1986, he relocated to New York City and entered the paper products field as office manager and later marketing manager for Abitibi Price, Inc., at that time North America’s largest paper manufacturer. While engaged in marketing analysis for the Canadian corporation, he frequently traveled north of the border. In his spare time he pursued M.B.A. studies in marketing at St. John’s University.
In 1994, after acquiring his M.B.A degree, Drew Miller went to work as an analyst for pulp, paper, and forestry products for Miller-Freeman, Inc., a publishing company specializing in trade and business newsletters and magazines. The following year, he was transferred to the company’s headquarters in San Francisco to serve as executive editor of Company Products, a publication analyzing paper companies. Most recently he was senior news editor for RISI, a leading paper industry publisher.
Married in 2006 to Christine “Chris” Cavalier, whom he had first met on a study trip to London while in college, and who became his life companion, Drew Miller greatly enjoyed their travels abroad together as well as visiting his family and friends back in the Niagara Falls area. He remained a dedicated sports fan throughout his life and was an especially devoted follower of the Sabres and Bills.
Andrew C. Miller, a faithful alumnus, was still residing in San Francisco when he died on March 8, 2010, of cardiac arrest, at the age of 47. In addition to his wife and his parents, he is survived by a sister, Ruth Miller, and a brother, John D. Miller, Jr., as well as nieces and nephews. His family and a multitude of friends will long remember Drew for his “generous, infectious spirit, an unfailingly positive approach to life, and a unique ability to bring moments of joy into the lives of those he cared about.”
