Mapping with Dave Bailey. May 28th-June 6th. The second leg of the trip began with a 3 day drive out to New Mexico. Upon arriving in Taos, students set up camp in the Rio Grande Canyon for a day of mineral collecting and mapping in preparation for the week long mapping adventure that lie ahead of them. June 2-6: Students mapped the guts of an ancient volcano in small groups. Using their knowledge of igneous rocks, each group covered an area of approximately 4 square miles in an effort to create a detailed map of the region. In addition to mapping, students practiced primitive camping without the luxuries of running water and bathrooms. June 7: Students drove to Great Sand Dunes National Monument in Colorado's San Juan Valley where they spent the day climbing the 700 foot high dunes. That evening they arrived in Frisco, CO for a long awaited shower in a hotel. For two days the students unwound and finished their mapping projects with colored maps and a historical geologic description of the mapped region. Summer Coon, CO |
